Newsletter from February 24th!

This week has been fun! It was short and sweet, but full of fun activities!

In Religion this week, we learned more about Jesus’ miracles! We discussed how Jesus stilled the storm, and how Jesus cast out the demons. For journal this week, the students had to pretend they were writing a journal entry from a disciple’s point of view, after witnessing one of Jesus’ miracles! These were so creative and interesting!

In Math this week, third grade worked with missing factors, multiplying three factors, multiplication properties, and problem solving. Fourth grade learned how to balance equations, and work with input/output boxes. We had lots of fun! Please continue working on multiplication facts at home!

In Language Arts this week, we began the book “Charlotte’s Web.” The students will each be reading this book independently and completing a study on it! For the next few weeks, our spelling words will come from this selection, and we will learn many new vocabulary words too! Do you know what the word “hullabaloo” means?

In Cursive we learned the letters “I” and “j”. In English, we learned how to distinguish the articles “a”, “an” and “the,” and how to use them correctly.

We began our expository writing or our research papers this week. Each student made a web of interests, and then decided on one to research and to begin writing about. We went to the library to look up information on the internet, and in encyclopedias and books. Be on the lookout for some of this work to come home!

All of the children have expressed some interest in purchasing the devotion book that I use every day for our classroom devotions! They love it! It is a 365 Day Devotion book, and Miss Lydia can get them to you for $5.00 if you would like to purchase one! Please just send the money to school in a labeled envelope, and I will take care of that for you! Thanks!

In P.E. this week, we played a game called Shark Attack! It was a fun game of tag! We are getting in such good shape, and will begin getting ready to review track and field events in the next few weeks…

In Social Studies today, we took our test over Chapter 3 in our Missouri History texts. We did so well and are learning so much about out awesome state! Thank you for studying with your child at home. We also played Missouri Jeopardy and really rocked out the answers!

Lutheran Schools Week is coming up, and we have so many fun activities planned! Please be sure to look at the Upcoming Events below, to see what we have in store!

Next week, we are having the Stanford Achievement Tests in 3rd/4th grades. Fourth graders are used to the routine, but to the third graders, this is new! We will be testing in the morning everyday next week. We will continue to have Special Classes on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Please make sure your child is getting to bed on time, and that he or she eats a great breakfast. It helps with their concentration and brain power! If you would like, please send healthy snacks for your child (or the entire class), for our break between testing each day. Thank you for your help with this! Today, we ran through some “practice tests” so your child will see what the testing is like, and also to form a strategy for answering questions. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this process.

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to see who can raise more: Kindergarten through fourth grade OR fifth grade through eighth grade!

Hello! :)

Hello, Parents! It was wonderful meeting with each of you last week for our student-led conferences. The children did a great job! I am so proud of them...

For the next few weeks, in Language Arts, we will be focusing on the book "Charlotte's Web," by E.B. White. If you have an extra copy of this book at home, and would be willing to let us borrow it, would you please send it to school with your child? Thank you so much!

A couple of reminders for Thursday this week: First the 3rd/4th graders will need their recorders for Music class. Also, for Art class, I have asked your child to bring his or her favorite toy to school. We will be studying and drawing them. These will be sent home on Thursday afternoon. Thank you.

Next week are our achievement tests! I will be sending more information about this home this week in the newsletter.

I am looking forward to a fun week! As always, thank you for your continued support and prayers!
Blessings,
Kim

Newsletter from February 10th

We have had an amazing week in third and fourth grade! The highlight of our week was definitely the baptism of our good friend, Aidan Parker, at Chapel this week! We are so happy for you, Aidan, and wish you God’s Blessings! This was such a wonderful event to witness, as Pastor Rich baptized him, and Aidan’s family was present as well! Praise the Lord!

In Religion this week, we learned more about Jesus’ miracles! We talked about Jesus healing the man at Betheseda, and discussed how we, too, can witness to those around us, and share the Good News in all we say and do. We talked about the differences between being an invalid and being invalid! There is huge difference, and not one of us in invalid in the eyes of our Heavenly Father.

We also had a very good discussion in our classroom this week about the 6th commandment. You may have heard about this at home. As you know, we are learning about all the commandments and their meanings. I always explain this commandment to the children in terms that are easy for them to understand and on their level. They had a lot of questions and we had a very lengthy class discussion on the topic. We discussed God’s Law, and God’s views on these things, and how, despite the fact that we are indeed sinners, God always loves us, always forgives us, and God always gives us His peace and understanding. Please let me know if you have any concerns about this! Thank you!

In Math this week, third grade continued with multiplication, and tested over their math facts. Please keep working on flash cards at home! Fourth graders also tested this week and did well! They will be working with longer multiplication and division next week!

In Language Arts this week, we learned how to write the cursive letters “a,” “c,” “m,” and “n.” We also worked with adjectives and adding them to our written work. We are beginning to be quite good writers! Both third and fourth graders read interesting stories about trees and friendship respectively. Third graders then wrote nature poetry and fourth graders wrote about their best friends! These will be coming home today!

Thanks!

In P.E. this week, we played kickball and had a blast! We played this with the rules of baseball, and enjoyed learning how to run the bases, and how to field the ball.

We will have our Valentine’s Day Party on February 14th, in the morning before Special Classes. A note is coming home today with details about our party. If your child chooses to bring valentines, please make sure there is one for each child in class. We have already made valentine holders and will play games and have a special treat. Thank you!

Fourth Grade Oral Book Reports!

Fourth Graders had a great time sharing their oral book reports. They had to read a historical fiction novel, and then dress as one of the characters and share a synopsis of the story! They were fantastic!

Newsletter from February 3rd

Hello! It is hard to believe it is February already! Gee whiz, the school year is flying by! This week, we had several days of a lot of fun!

We celebrated the 100th Day of School on Monday! We had a great time with our 100 Day song, marching around the classroom, listening to the poem “Henry and the 100 Hiccups,” and doing our centers, which included drawing what we will look like when are 100 years old, finding 100 words we can read, writing 100 day poetry, and some probability centers where we flipped a coin 100 times, and ro9lled a die 100 times! This was such a fun day! Make sure you take a look at our folders that are coming home today!

Yesterday, we talked about Groundhog Day! We read a story about Punxatawney Phil, the Fearless Forecaster, and learned a lot of tidbits about groundhogs, their habitats, and characteristics. There are six more weeks of winter!

Today we had our Afternoon of Awesomeness! Girls voted and decided to have a fashion show, wear their pjs, and have a dance party while the boys cleaned, Then once the boys were done, we played dodge ball, played video games, and watched a movie ! It was fun times! Our school raised over $500 this month to send to Joplin!

In Math this week, third grade continued with multiplication, and really concentrated on finding the missing factors. Fourth graders continued on their unit about multiplication and division this week, and solved problems where they had to pick the property they used to solve it.
In Language Arts this week, we began cursive handwriting with the letters “e” and “l.” They are doing great and taking their time! Both groups read stories that were very interesting this week! The third graders read about the dinosaur bones of the albertosaurus, and the fourth graders read about how to train dogs to be helping dogs for people with special needs. Both were very interesting, with neat vocabulary, and new facts. Fourth grade shared their oral book reports this week too! They had to read a historical nonfiction book, dress as a character, and then tell the story from that person’s perspective. They were great! Be on the lookout for pictures of the website! We also worked on our persuasive essays this week, and many of us finished them up and handed them in.

In Religion this week, we learned about Jesus raising the official’s son. We will continue to learn of Jesus’ miracles next week. We talked about how God answers our prayers and requests too, in His own time.

Thanks!

In P.E. this week, we played Capture the Flag and Pin Dodge Ball! It was “kid request week’” and those are their favorites!

During Art today, we created woven paper hearts! These will decorate our classroom soon. It already looks like pink and red collided in there! We are very ready for February!

We will have our Valentine’s Party on February 14th, in the morning before Speical Classes.
If you have not already signed up for student-led parent/teacher conferences, please let me know what date and time works best for you and will get you signed up! Conferences are February 16th and 17th.

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to see who can raise more: Kindergarten through fourth grade OR fifth grade through eighth grade!

The Afternoon of Awesomeness!!!

2/2/12
Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is our Afternoon of Awesomeness! As a school, we raised over $500 this month for our friends in Joplin! The girls in the school won the challenge, but our class has really incorporated the boys into our afternoon, as well! While the boys do some cleaning and organizing around the classroom, the girls are going to change into their pjs, participate in a fashion show, and then have a dance party! Please allow the girls to bring pjs, stuffed animals, and anything okay for the fashion show!
After this, they have voted to play dodge ball in the gym, play video games, and watch a movie (The Little Rascals) with the boys. Please allow your boy or girl to bring these handheld games, (with games appropriate for their age level and school), and a snack to share if he or she chooses.
This will be fun afternoon! Thanks for all your support!
Blessings,
Ms. Myers
