Have a beautiful fall weekend!

Hello, Parents!  Greetings to you all!  I am so thankful for the beautiful fall weather!

Reminders/Updates:
* We had our FIELD TRIP today!  4th-6th grades went to the Coterie Theatre to see the play "A Wrinkle in Time," and it was interesting.  When we got back to school, we had some great discussions about plays, about how some parts from the book were changed or deleted to fit a theatre atmosphere, and how Christianity was depicted in the play.  The overall theme of the book was that love can defeat evil.  God is good ALL the time.  Some of this was depicted in the play, but some was not.  I am thankful to have had a frank discussion when we came back to school.  Thank you to all of our parent drivers.  We had a wonderful time!

*It was fun to see so many of you at DONUTS WITH DAD (and other special people) on Wednesday morning!  Thank you for coming and spending some time with us!  We had SUCH a great turn-out…It made my heart swell to see so many loved ones here!  Thank you for coming and having a treat and playing some games with us!

*Our WALK-A-THON was an absolute success!  We had a beautiful day and a ton of excited walkers!  A special THANK YOU to all of our volunteers for helping out that day and to all of our friends and families that donated.  We will be able to purchase some brand-new lunch tables!  Thanks to be to God for all of His blessings!

-Branch of Service
-Years of Service
-Any other important information you may want added!
(If your photos were in last year’s slideshow, please let us know this, as that information has been saved and you don’t need to send it in again.)
THANK YOU to all veterans!  It is humbling to know how many have given their lives, their time, and their service to God, to us, and to our country.  Thank you SO much!
*On Tuesday, November 25th, at 11:00, the 4th graders will have their classroom THANKSGIVING FEAST in lieu of lunch. We will be studying the first Thanksgiving and all about the Pilgrims and Wampanoag. We will also be talking about all the things we, as Christian Americans, should be thankful for! What a wonderful way to praise our Father for all He has given! I will supply the turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy, but if you are willing to send in some “extras” it would be mighty appreciated!  Please take a look at the sign-up if you are able!  (I have several outlets in our classroom for crock pots, if needed.)  Thanks so much for your help!
Here is what we have been up to this week:
RELIGION: This week, we focused again on being good leaders in our classrooms, homes, and in the community.  We learned the stories of Saul and of David and how he called upon God’s name to help him in his times of trouble.
MEMORY:
10/14-and I pray You to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and; life may please You.

10/17-For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things.   Let Your holy angel be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

LANGUAGE ARTS: We read a new genre of a story this week: a fractured fairytale!  It is titled, “Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude.”  It was one of those stories that was a blast to read, and really just gets kids on fire for reading!  They loved it!  I also found two other stories written by Kevin O’Malley that I shared with the class this week!  We had some fun.  We learned how to compare and contrast using Venn diagrams and how to make predictions.  We reviewed suffixes and hyperboles.  We also discussed different types of verbs—action, helping, and linking.   Patricia Polacco, our new Author of the Month was introduced.  We read her book, "Meteor!" and discussed making inferences.

SPELLING WORDS for the Week of October 17th:
Story: Coming Distractions
bloom, cookbook, tool, shampoo, put, wool, stool, proof, prove, group, brook, foolish, bush, crooked, booth, raccoon, hook, groom, roof, soup, bulletin, cocoon
Challenge Word: omnipotent
MATH- We have been working SO hard on multi-step word problems this week!  This is quite a skill to develop as we work through real-world problems and decide how to solve them.  We finished up this chapter with a review and tested over it.  I am proud of their “nose to the grindstone” kind of mentality!  We are working through fives in mad minutes.

SCIENCE- We had some fun in Science this week as we talked about how plants are food and can be used in many different ways and for different things.  We solved riddles about different types of fruit.  We classified vegetables and fruits as either the fruit, the seeds, the leaves, the stem, or the roots of a plant.  We also watched a fun video of food decomposing and how God uses this process to bring back new life!
SPECIAL CLASSES
ART- We made woven pumpkins out of construction paper.  They are decorating our classroom right now.
MUSIC- During music class, we have been practicing songs for the Veterans' Day Program and for our Advent Service.
P.E.- This week we played dodgeball and pin dodgeball.  We are learning all of the new rules.
WRITING- We shared our BioPoems in Readers' Theatre.  We also began the planning process of writing our own fractured fairytales with partners!  These are super-cool!
SPANISH- Mr. Murray read a Dr. Seuss book in Spanish, as he had them use context clues to figure out words.  The kids are having fun!
We finishe our classroom puzzle.

We learned how to play Bump Math.

This was our Still Life artwork from last week.
