Happy Veterans Weekend!

Hi, 4th grade parents!  We have had a beautiful week—beautiful weather, a wonderful turnout for singing last Sunday, a fabulous Veterans Day service today, and hard-working kiddos!

*HAPPY VETERAN’S DAY tomorrow!  This morning was our Veterans Day program and it was SO beautiful!  We had quite a turnout!  The children sang several amazing songs about being Americans, loving our God, and loving our country.  It was a beautiful morning!  Getting able to share that experience with my dad and husband was very special to me too.  THANK YOU, Veterans, for giving of yourselves for the rest of us.  We have several parents in here that are veterans and/or active duty military.  Please know that you are prayed for and LOVED!  We closed with this prayer, which is very poignant:

Dear Lord, we honor our veterans in your name. We thank you – as we thank them – for their sacrifice. We ask you to return to them the favor of your blessing, a gift we on our own could never offer. We ask that you would give our veterans a peace beyond the peace they fought to secure, a peace in their own hearts, wrapped in the joy of a life touched by your strong hand. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Please see below for important events coming up:

*On Tuesday, November 21st, at 11:00, the 4th graders will have their classroom THANKSGIVING FEAST in lieu of lunch. We will be studying the first Thanksgiving that previous week, and all about the Pilgrims and Wampanoag. We will also be talking about all the things we, as Christian Americans, should be thankful for! What a wonderful way to praise our Father for all He has given! I will supply the turkey, cups, and plastic-ware. If you are able to help supply any items in the sign-up, please do so!  I have several outlets in our classroom for crock pots, if needed.  Thanks so much for your help!

RELIGION- This week, we focused on Gideon and Samson, and how they were judges for the people of Israel.  Both men, were sinners, yet led by example.  We had a great discussion this week about the battles that we face in our own lives, whether in school, or home, with friends, or even internally.  We had a very mature conversation about the power of forgiveness, and how we are only able to do this with God’s help.  We talked about how when we forgive, it as much about ourselves, as about the person we are forgiving.  Harboring resentment and hate only causes us to be weighed down with those feelings.  I was floored by some of the insight these kiddos had.  It was a great time of sharing our faith!  We also learned in Chapel this week that we are FORGIVEN!  What a beautiful message that was!

MEMORY for Next Week:

11/14-but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.

11/17-THE THIRD COMMANDMENT

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.

LANGUAGE ARTS/SOCIAL STUDIES- This week, we read the book “the Butterfly” by Patricia Polacco.  This book is a true story about WWII, the invasion of the Nazis, and the French underground and resistance.  We had some very poignant conversations about the war, about bravery, and about soldiers that fight for what they believe in.  We also used other books of Patricia Polacco’s to discuss the Civil War and WWI.  (“Pink and Say” and “Tucky Jo and Little Heart.”) We used Venn diagrams, character analysis, and sequencing events to understand these stories.  We also had large discussions about veterans and Veterans Day this week.

SPELLING WORDS for Friday, November 17th: (from “Molly’s Pilgrim”) admired, ignorant, pilgrim, model, naturally, taunted, modern, tenement, giggle, clothespin, *Wampanoag

MATH- We are on our 8’s in mad minutes!  This week, we worked on finding factor pairs, whether a number is prime or composite, finding and building patterns and rules, and generating patterns of our own.  We reviewed over this chapter today, and will test on Monday!

SOCIAL STUDIES-We began memorizing states and capitals.  With all of our work on Veterans Day this week, we got a bit behind.  We will test over these next Friday!

SPECIAL CLASSES

ART- We painted flags for the Veterans Day Program, then went on a hunt to find “patriotic” words in magazines.  These were glued to the flags and finalized with Modge Podge.

MUSIC-We practiced A LOT this week for the Veterans Day program!

P.E.- We played outside and played Pac-Man!

WRITERS’ WORKSHOP- We wrote letters and made cards for veterans.

 Have a blessed weekend!

Kim

...and lastly, I would like to pay tribute to the wonderful veterans in my life!  They were able to come today, and meet my class!  I am so humbled by your service, and pray that we will never forget the sacrifices you have made.  I love you!
