Jobs

JOBS

Children will get paid “Brunkhorst Bucks”” for their classroom job.  Each child will have a job for two weeks and then their responsibilities will change.  They will fill out applications for the jobs that they are desiring.  The jobs they may have are as follows:

Calendar Control, Mailer, Librarian, Custodians, Recyclers, Plant Keeper, Bankers, Door Holder, Caboose, Pencil Patrol, and Secret Admirer. With this money they earn, the kids can purchase small items from me, like pencils, erasers, cards, etc.  They can save their money for bigger items like more computer time, more free time, or books.   Or, they can save all their money to bid on items that we will have in a classroom auction at the end of the school year.  They will keep track of this money in their “banks” and will keep a running log of deposits and expenditures.

There is a flipside to this money earned as well. :) When a child forgets to complete homework, or does not turn homework in on time, he or she will have to pay a fine.  If they complain about their job, or refuse to do it, they won’t get paid that week.

With this program I am hoping to accomplish two objectives.  First of all, I am hoping the students will gain some sense of responsibility for their actions.  I think they will work hard at their jobs and at their school behavior.

Secondly, they will gain a broader understanding of economics.  They will learn how to save, how to monitor their spending, and how to gain some pride in their work.  We will become like a well-oiled machine in here.  It is quite a sight to see!
