Students will have memory work two times a week--every Tuesday and Friday morning. We will always say the memory work together in class as well. Memory work consists of Bible verses, prayers, commandments, and items from Luther’s Small Catechism. This is part of your child’s overall Religion grade. Memory for the year is below! Our first verse is our theme for the school year: “Rooted in Christ.”

9/22-THE FIRST COMMANDMENT You shall have no other gods. What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.
9/25-THE SECOND COMMANDMENT You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie or deceive by His name, but call upon Him in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.
9/29-THE THIRD COMMANDMENT Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.
10/2-Matthew 22:37-39 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
10/6-THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT Honor your father and your mother. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.
10/9-THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT You shall not murder. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.
10/13-THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT You shall not commit adultery. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we lead a pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other.
10/16-THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT You shall not steal. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor’s money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.

11/3-THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.
11/6-THE NINTH COMMANDMENT You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor’s inheritance or house, or get it in a way which appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it.
11/10-THE TENTH COMMANDMENT You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not entice or force away our neighbor’s wife, workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty.

1/26-What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and the power of the devil.

2/23-THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven. What does this mean? With these words God tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father.
2/26-1 John 3:1 “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”
3/2-FIRST PETITION
Hallowed be Thy name. What does this mean? God’s name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also.
3/5-Matthew 5:14,16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. “
3/9-SECOND PETITION
Thy kingdom come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also.
3/12-Matthew 6:33-34 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
3/16-THIRD PETITION
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.
3/19-Psalm 46:1, 10 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
3/22-John 11:25 “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.”
4/2-FOURTH PETITION
Give us this day our daily bread. What does this mean? God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to all evil people, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving.
4/6-Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
4/9-FIFTH PETITION
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. What does this mean? We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them.
4/13-Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
4/16-SIXTH PETITION
And lead us not into temptation. What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us.
4/20-Ephesians 6:10-11 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
4/23-SEVENTH PETITION
But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil.
4/27-CONCLUSION TO THE LORD’S PRAYER
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. What does this mean? This means that I should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him.
4/30-The 23rd Psalm
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
5/4-Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
