Newsletter From August 26, 2011

Dear Parents,
It has been a great first week of school! We have had a great time reconnecting and sharing stories with one another. What a great bunch of kids!
This week has basically been a "getting to know you" type of week for us. On Tuesday, we played several name games and wrote about our summer vacations. After I read the funny stories called The Teacher from the Black Lagoon, and What I Did on Summer Vacation, the kids were able to ask me anything they wanted to about me. We also took a tour around the classroom to learn about everything in it. It was fun seeing the kids’ excitement for the school year!
On Wednesday, we made our Time Capsule to be opened the last day of school! We were weighed and measured, and we traced our hands and feet. We also made and added interest inventories, lists about our likes and dislikes, and self-portraits to the capsules. We began math by taking a mad minute and doing a problem solver, which will be done every day. In Art, the children created "Who Am I?" faces. These are hanging in the hallway, so be sure to come by and check them out.
Yesterday, we wrote in our journals for the first time, which was fun! We also read in the Bible about the Creation story and today we began making creation books which we will hang in our classroom. They are turning out so beautifully! In Math, we reviewed fact families. All of the students are doing so well! J We began a book by our Author of the Month, Judy Blume, entitled Tales of a Fourth Grade nothing. The children are enjoying the antics of Peter and his little brother, Fudge! He is so mischievous! We also wrote Bio-poems today. These are beautiful and will on display soon!
Today, the we said our first memory verse, Galatians 5:22, and all of the children said it without a hitch! Today we also created the rules and expectations for the year. We actually summed it up into one expectation: Be respectful, kind, and polite to God, others, and yourself. It really does encompass it all doesn’t it?! We wrote this on poster paper and all signed it.
The children will have spelling words beginning next week.
Your child’s individual spelling list will come home on Mondays. The children will have a pretest every Monday. This will give them a good idea which words to focus on. We will practice these words in the classroom nearly every day. We will put the words in ABC order, put them in sentences, and look them up in the dictionary. On Fridays, the kids will have a post-test over these words. There will also be a challenge word that they can practice. This work can only help get extra credit on tests. It will not hinder them if they do not spell it right.
We will start full force in Language Arts, Reading, Math, and Social Studies next week. We are all excited!
Just a Reminder: Yearbooks available: if you did not purchase a yearbook for your child at the end of last school year, you have a new opportunity! We will be handing out and signing yearbooks after chapel on September 7th. If you would like to purchase a yearbook by this date, the cost is $13. Please talk with Mrs. Barber or Mrs. Warren.

Thank you for already being such supportive and great parents! I am excited for a great school year and look forward to working with you! God's Blessings on your weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers
