Dear Parents,
It
has been a wonderful first week of school!
I have loved getting to know the third graders, along with our new third
grader, Angel Williams. I have also
loved seeing my beloved fourth graders.
It is so neat for me to witness them in this new role, where they are
the leaders of the classroom! They all do such a great job of sharing Jesus’
love! What a great bunch of kids… :)
This
week has basically been a "getting to know you" type of week for
me. On Tuesday, we played several name
games and played bingo to learn about our classroom. We loved eating those Starburst! After I read the funny story called The
Teacher from the Black Lagoon, the kids were able to ask me anything they
wanted to about me. They then, wrote
down ideas of what the ideal teacher would be.
If I offered recess all day,
let them play video games anytime they wanted, and took them to California each
year, I would be a huge hit!
On
Wednesday, we read the story My Summer Vacation, and then the kids each
wrote about theirs. These were so awesome for me to read! Make sure to read your child’s when they come
home this afternoon in Friday Folders.
We also shared our “Bags of 5 Things.”
These were fun too, as we all got to know each other a bit better. We made “Who Am I?” pictures that are now
hanging in the hallway. Please see if
you can read the clues and figure out who your child is!
Thursday, the children helped create some class
expectations. We were actually able to
sum them up into four expectations.
1. Honor God.
2. Treat others who
you want to be treated—like Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
3. Be thankful for
what you get.
4. Listen and work
quietly.
We wrote this on poster paper and all signed and
dated it!
We
also created time capsules that we will open the last week of school! It is SO much fun to see improvements and how
much each child has grown! We included
our height, traces or our hands and feet, a self-portrait, a writing sample,
and a questionnaire.
Today,
we had our first Health lesson. We will
be talking about the five senses, and today we focused on the sense of
touch. We completed a fun “experiment”
with toothpicks!
In Religion this week, we reviewed the Creation
story. We learned the words: omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. We also began writing and drawing Creation
Books. These are beautiful and you will
soon see the finished products! Memory
will begin next week. It will be every
Tuesday and Friday. I will be asking the
children to say their memory to me in the morning, usually when they arrive at
school. Next week’s verses are:
August
27–
And
he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers,
|
|
to
equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of
Christ… Ephesians 4: 11-12
|
August
30- THE FIRST COMMANDMENT- You shall have no other gods.
What
does this mean? We should fear, love,
and trust in God above all things.
Spelling and Reading will begin next week! Your child’s spelling list will come home on
Mondays. The children will have a
pretest every Monday. This will give
them a good idea which words to focus on.
We will practice these words in the classroom nearly every day. We will put the words in ABC order, put them
in sentences, and look them up in the dictionary. On Fridays, the kids will have a post-test
over these words. There will also be a
challenge word that will come home for your child on Monday to study and
learn. He or she will need to know how
to spell this word and the definition of it in order to get credit for it on
the test. It will only be for extra
credit, and will not hinder the grade if it is wrong. Spelling words will also be on our website.
We began math this week with a review of math
properties and of missing addends. Third
grade reviewed digits, odds, evens,
and finding missing numbers on a number line.
Fourth graders worked with putting numbers in standard, written, and
expanded forms, and also learning how to identify periods in place value. I
also introduced “mad minutes” and problem solvers.” Please urge your child to study his or her
math facts so they can become memorized!
They can use flash cards, math games, and there are even some fun games
that you can play online. My favorite
games are at www.arcademicskillbuilders.com.
Today, students will be bringing home their Friday
Folders with graded papers from the week, as well as handouts from the
office. Please remember that your child
can redo assignments that are a B or below, and turn them back in for half
credit. Third grade will get used to
these letter grades! Starred papers do
not have a letter grade, but were checked.
Book report forms came home this week. Third
graders will be reading mysteries and fourth graders will be reading Newbery
Award winning books. I explained these
assignments, and most of the children found his or her book to read. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Next Week:
Home
school students will join us for the first time on Tuesday of next week!
We are very excited to have these friends join us after lunch.
Thank you for being such supportive and great
parents! I am excited for a wonderful
school year and look forward to working with each of you! These children come in with eager smiles
everyday…they are already a joy to teach!
God's Blessings on your weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim
