Newsletter from 9-13-13

Third and Fourth Grade News

From the Week of September 13, 2013

Hello, parents!  Here is what we have been up to in 3rd/4th Grade: :)

Religion- We talked about Abrahm and Lot and how God blesses us.  We must always remember to turn to Him in our times of need...
Language Arts- The third graders read “Destiny’s Gift,” and we talked a lot about character.  Fourth graders read “How Tia Lola Came to Stay,” and learned how our actions sometimes really affect others.  We reviewed the differences between sentences and questions.
Math- Both grade levels tested over Chapter 2 this week, and did well!  In the next chapters, the third graders will cover number sense...learning addition properties, and reviewing how to solve longer addition problems.  Fourth graders are also covering number sense on a higher level, where they have to complete some mental math and estimating sums and differences, as well as solving longer problems with zeroes.
Social Studies- We took our first Social Studies test, and ALL the students did so well!  Thank you for helping them review!  We now will begin to work on Missouri books and dig into Chapter 2.  Later in the week and early next week, we will begin our Science Unit for Earthworks about the habitats in Missouri and Kansas.
P.E.- This week in P.E., we played Four Quadrants, a dodge ball game using the four corners of the gym and four teams.
Art- We learned all about line.  We watched a video about different types of lines, and then created contour pictures of animals, and decorated them with line.  Later, we added colorful watercolor to the background  They are beautiful!
Music- With Mrs. Mundt and Mrs. Krekel, the children practiced their favorite songs, as well as new songs for when the kids sing at church on October 20th.  They also watched a video of the pageant.  It is so fun to see ourselves on the “big screen.”
Computers-This week, the students again worked on the typing skills and the home keys.  We began typing (publishing) some of our written work.  the children learned how to find the home keys and practice their typing skills.  We also played some fun, educational games.
Writers’ Workshop- This week, we finished up our poems and began publishing them.  We focused quite a bit on wiring new stories.

Parents, I would love to get your input on something.  With the advancements of technology, I am looking into having the students do their “publishing” of stories and writing of papers using Google Docs.  This way, they can work at home, and on any computer here in the building, without using a flashdrive.  They would also be able to email me their papers, and work.  The only down-side is, the children will need to have an email address.  Would you please give me your opinion about this?  Are you comfortable with that?  Does your child already have an email account?  Would you like for your child to use that one or set up a new one just for school?  I would set the expectations about what this address would be used for, etc.  Please give me your input and thoughts.  Thank you so much!

Upcoming Field Trips:
October 31st-Fall party at Memaw’s House.  (Includes a hayride, games, snacks, and lunch.  Home school kids are also invited!)
-For full-time students only, as there is curriculum that corresponds with both:
~November 12th-Earthworks.  Please make sure to get your permission slip in.  We have our three parent helpers: Steve Patton, Angie Robbins, and Jeff Mundt!  Thank you so much for offering to help out!!
~December 13th-School of Economics

Have a great week!
Blessings,
Kim
