Third and
Fourth Grade News
From the Week of September 6,
2013
Hello, parents! I
am sorry this letter is a bit late getting to you this week! It has been
a busy, busy weekend! We have had another great week… It was short,
but fun! Below, I have highlighted things we have learned this week:
Religion- We continued our study
of Cain and Abel, as well as the Tower of Babel. We talked about praising
the name of God, rather than singing out won praises! Less of me, and
more of YOU! We focused on the verse from Psalm 103:1… “Bless the
Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name.” And...of course,
we then broke into song! :)
Language Arts- The third graders read
“The Trial of Cardigan Jones,” and learned some new words that have to do with
a courtroom….Fourth graders read the historical story called “My Brother
Martin,” written by Martin Luther King Jr.’s sister. It was a wonderful
story, and let to some awesome discussions! Please continue to practice
your child’s vocabulary words each week. These are always located at the
beginning of the story. They will be tested on these each Friday.
In English this week, we focused on finding errors in
sentences. These are called Daily Oral Language. They will get
stronger on these skills as the year progresses. I will send home notes
this week, indicating your child’s Scholastic Reading Counts book goal for the
quarter. Thank you!
Math- Both grade levels
tested over Chapter 1 this week, and did well! Later in the week, as a
whole class, we worked on comparing numbers, and ordering numbers. We
then broke off into our own grade-level math, and completed separate
assignments. Third graders focused on numbers up to the ten-thousands’
place, and the fourth graders focused on numbers up to the hundred-millions’
place. We are also focusing on number sense. Please continue to
practice math facts (addition and multiplication) at home with your child
through flash cards and computer games. Thank you!
Social Studies- Thank you for taking
the time to help your child fill out the family tree and the interview with a
fellow Missourian. We shared these this week, and really focused on our
speaking skills.! We did not get quite as far this week in Missouri
History as I had hoped, so we did not have our quiz. We will have this on
this coming up Friday. The children have made note cards of the vocabulary words
they will need to know for the first chapter in our Missouri History texts.
They will be bringing these home to study, and we will be talking a lot
about them in school as well. We will also be learning about current
events this week, using Scholastic News.
P.E.- This week in P.E., we
practiced team-building skills, but have fun relay races using different skill
sets: skipping, galloping, running, crab walk, using scooters, et.
We had fun!
Music- With Mrs. Mundt and
Mrs. Krekel, the children again practiced their songs for the Fall Pageant,
which is this weekend.
Computers-This week, the children
learned how to find the home keys and practice their typing skills. We
also played some fun, educational games.
Writers’ Workshop- We began the drafting,
revising, and editing process on “I” Poems...all about us! We will finish
these up next week! Cannot wait to share them…
Art- We learned the primary
colors, and how to form the secondary colors using them. We also learned
and mixed the tertiary colors and made a paint pallet, before painting our
Impressionistic pictures from last week! They are now hanging in the
hallway for all to see! Come by and take a look!
