Third and
Fourth Grade News
From the Week
of September 12, 2014
Dear Parents,
We have had a great
week! One of my highlights that we do
every day, is that we have devotions every morning, followed by highs and lows,
which is always so wonderful, as I get an insight into the children’s’ lives
that I normally would not get the chance to see and it is so wonderful… We
always then pray for one another and give each other a blessing.
Full-Time Students:
In Religion
this week, we talked a lot about different ways to use the Bible. We practiced looking up verses, using the
Table of Contents, using the Bible references, and memorizing the books of the
Bible. Today, we looked up the Bible
story about Philip sharing the Good News with a stranger…We had to read the
story from the Bible and then put the story into chronological order.
Memory
work for next week is:
September 16-
The
New Testament
Matthew
Mark
Luke
John
Acts
Romans
1
& 2 Corinthians
September
19-
Galatians
Ephesians
Philippians
Colossians
1
& 2 Thessalonians
1
& 2 Timothy
Titus
Philemon
In Language Arts this
week we discussed how to tell the difference between statements and questions,
and learned how to edit sentences that needed those ending marks. Third graders read a story entitled, Destiny’s
Gift, and we discussed ways that we could help out in the world as well. Fourth graders read a story called How Tia
Lola Came to Stay. This story
actually led us into a great discussion about how we should be kind to others,
and really be in tune to their feelings.
We talked about verbal and non-verbal cues. This is a very intuitive class! Please continue to urge your child to read
those book report books! Thanks!
In Math this week,
third graders learned how to order numbers and tell whether they were greater
than, less than, or equal to another number.
They also worked a lot with word problems. Fourth graders also worked with comparing and
ordering numbers, as well as revising how to round. We are getting very good at mad minutes!
In Science this week we
learned about the Scientific Process, and have learned new vocabulary words
such as hypothesis and observe.
We have begun Chapter 1, about Living Things, and will begin doing
experiments next week. Their vocabulary
words will be coming home soon to study.
We will begin our School of Economics
unit next week as well. Our field trip
is October 10th, so we need to get to prepared! For those of you that are not aware, the
School of Economics is simulated town in which the students each have a job,
make the products, earn money, and learn how to wisely spend money. We prepare for this day at school by having
job interviews, discussing how to wisely spend, make a profit, learning how to
pay off loans, etc. The children will
also learn how to write checks and how to spend wisely. It is so much fun! We will need parent volunteers, so be on the
lookout for the Sign-up Genius in the next few weeks! Thank you!
All Students:
This week, on Thursday, we learned
about September 11th, 2001.
We watched a short video about this fateful day, and also read several
books and had a very candid discussion.
We made a beautiful book about our thoughts…This led to a great
discussion about God and His love for us.
We shared the Bible verse Romans 8: 38-39….and discussed how God will
never, ever leave us. We used this verse
to illustrate our thoughts of 9-11.
For I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the
present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything
else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
~
Romans 8: 38-39
The Scholastic Book Fair is
currently at 66% of our goal. Awesome! It
will be open for purchases after school today (until 5:30 pm) and after worship
on Sunday.
The Blue
Springs Fall Fun Fest Parade is tomorrow! Timothy Lutheran will be #26
in the parade line-up. Please meet us near Thomas Ultican Elementary School
(Vesper St) at 9:50 am and be a part of the parade. It is a western theme, so
you are welcome to wear bandanas and cowboy hats along with your Timothy shirts
or school colors – navy and red. If you are not accompanying your student in
the parade, please pick them up at St. John LaLande Catholic Parish on RD Mize
Rd. We should be at the end of parade route by 10:45 am.
Our Parking
Lot Fund Raiser takes place again this year at Charlie’s Auto.
Volunteers are still needed to direct cars and collect money during the Fall
Fun Fest. Sign up at Parking for Fall Fun Fest.
School
Picture Day is Monday,
September 15! Individual photos of home school students begin at 8:30 am;
followed by the all-school and class group photos. Dress your best and bring
your smiles!
Orders for Timothy
Rams Apparel are due by Friday, September 26. Please contact the school
office if you need an order form.
Paper
grocery bags are needed
for our class to gather recycling from the classrooms and offices on Friday
mornings. Please drop off paper bags in the school office.
In Art , we used
Romans 8 from above as an inspiration to create torn paper projects about
September 11, or about how deep our Father’s Love is for us… We will finish
these up next week!
In P.E. this week, we
finished the volleyball unit. The
children learned the correct way to serve, and practiced passing with a partner
and to a target. Scrimmaging and Scatter
were fun!
In Writers’ Workshop and
Computer Lab, we wrote poems about ourselves and our talents. We used some exaggeration in these poems too!
We are all in the publishing step and are typing them into Google Docs
to print them out.
In Music this week, we identified and played rhythms on common items and learned about
quarter notes, rests, and eighth notes.
