Newsletter 9-19-14

Dear Parents,
We have had a great week!  Here is what we have been up to:

All Students:
During Art , we met Roy G. Biv.  After a description was read to us, we drew pictures what we thought he would look like.  We then compared pictures.  We also copied down the passage.  Through him, we learned the colors of the rainbow!  These are hanging from the ceiling next door.  We also began learning the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, and began paint mixing.  This is fun!  J

In P.E. this week, we started playing different versions of dodge ball!  We played Pin Dodge ball and Doctor Dodge ball!  We need to work a little on good sportsmanship, so we have been going over this in the classroom…

For Writers’ Workshop, we had Readers’ Theatre, where we these classroom authors shared some of their writing!  We continued writing our short stories and some have begun to publish them.  I am excited to see the finished products!

In Computer Lab , we have worked with publishing our poems and stories. We also worked on Typing Web.  The focus is keeping hands on the home keys and looking at the computer screen instead of the keys!

In Music this week, we used wooden instruments to create beats and rhythms…

Full-Time Students:

In Religion this week, we talked about the Law and the Gospel, and how the Law shows our sin to us, like a mirror.  The Gospel, however, is that Good News that God has forgiven our sins through Jesus, who on the cross paid the penalty for us. We also discussed the ways Christians can flourish and grow by learning about the Six Chief Parts of the Small Catechism, meaning the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the Ten Commandments, Holy Baptism, Confession, and the Sacrament of the Altar.

Memory work for next week is:
September 23-
Hebrews
James
1 & 2 Peter
1 , 2, & 3 John
Jude
Revelation

September 26-Recite all of the New Testament Books

In Language Arts we worked very diligently at DOLs (Daily Oral Language). The students are getting much more comfortable editing and revising sentences, and getting so much more confident too!
Third graders read a story entitled, Pop’s Bridge, about the building of the San Francisco Bridge. This was a neat story!  Fourth graders read a story called The Power of W.O.W., and they put on the play for the third graders today!  They did a fantastic job and showed real collaboration as they worked as a team!
Next week, we will begin to write our first papers as a class.  We will use the writing process to write personal narratives, and will even publish them at school.
Book reports are due soon!  Third graders need to read a mystery book and have
their reports completed by October 17th.. Fourth graders are reading Newbery Award books and their reports are due next week on September 30th.  Thank you!

In Math this week, third graders rounded numbers to the closest 10, 100, and 1,000, and then tested over this skill.  Some are still really struggling with this skill, and we will continue to work on it until all have mastered!  Fourth graders learned about place value, rounding, and estimating, and will review this next week and test over it!

We began School of Economics!  Yeah!  You have probably had your child come home and tell you all the details—they are so super-excited, which gets us super-excited!  We attend the facility on October 10th.  This week, we met with 3rd-6th grades, and learned as much as we could pack into two hours this week. We learned what economics is, (the buying and selling of goods), we discussed the different countries that will be there and what each country makes and sells, we learned about Ellis Island and immigrants, we talked about how to fill our job applications, had interviews today (wish you all could have been here for that one!), and have begun to work on passports.  We have been SO busy, but having SO much fun!!!
The sign-up genius for the field trip went home today.  Here is the link:

In Science this week we began reading chapter 1, which discussed the characteristics of all living things.  We have been busy making flash cards, so we can learn these new words.  We will work slowly through this chapter, and I will keep you updated as to when we will be quizzing over facts.  The students love our new science books!

Friday Folders will come home on Monday next week!  We had School of Economic job interviews right up to the wire today, and did not have time to pack them!  Be looking for the “Monday Folder!”  Thanks!  Mid-Terms will come home on Tuesday.
