Newsletter--10/31/14

Hello, Parents! Happy Reformation Day!  Happy Halloween!  I pray that you are safe and warm tonight… :)

I enjoyed meeting with each of you at conferences.  Thank you so much for being such supportive parents.  It is encouraging to know that we are a team ensuring your child’s spiritual future, as well as academic future.  Thank you for working with me!

We have had a wonderful week of school!  Gabby was baptized on Wednesday, during Chapel…along with her brother and sister!  We celebrated!  Please continue to lift Gabby and her siblings up in your prayers.  God is SO good!

Today we got to go on our field trip to Memaw’s and had our Fall Party! We had so much fun…and enjoyed the fall weather!  We took a hayride, took turns on the 4-wheeler, on the zip-line, jumped on the trampoline, played volleyball, basketball, had a hayride, ate snacks….What a fun day! :)

In Religion this week we learned all about the life of Martin Luther.  We read several books, and completed workbook pages and activities about his life.  We talked about how the power of the Holy Spirit enabled him to stand against the church at that time and nail the 95 theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg, and in turn, change the world, and share the true Gospel message.  We also had fun learning the tune and the words to “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.”

Language Arts
This week third graders read a story called the Kamishibai Man, which brought up a lot of discussions about the past, about the absence of television and video games and using one’s imagination.  Great conversation!  The fourth graders read Dear Mr. Winston, which also led to some great talks…about always telling the truth, about being accountable, and about having empathy…  I love the way your children share.  It is refreshing!  Fourth grade shared their book reports today and did a great job!

Math
This week, third grade been working on counting money and telling time!  We have discussed quarter till and quarter after, different ways to tell time, and elapsed time.  We have worked with counting back change from $1.00 and counting money in general.  Please practice telling time and counting money at home, as these are both life skills, and some of the children still really struggle with these concepts.  We will also review these chapters this week and test over them early next week.  After this, we will begin our multiplication units!  Fourth grade has been working with mean, median, mode, and organizing data.  After this chapter, we will be working with longer multiplication.

Science
We finished up our unit this week on plants and animals and will review all next week.  We will play Science Jeopardy, which I will also send the link home so you can play there as well.  We will test on Friday.

Social Studies
Full-Time students will be studying all about the first Thanksgiving, the history and the story in the next few weeks.  We also will assume roles as Wampanoag Indians or as Pilgrims, and have a Thanksgiving celebration on November 24th.  I will let you know more details as this unfolds! Thanks.

Writers’ Workshop/Keyboarding
We wrote spooky stories this week, and shared some of them in Reader’s Theatre.  We played spooky music as we wrote, to set the tone… :)  We had a lot of fun, and some giggles too!

Art
We created pumpkin pictures, with patterns and watercolors.  We will add final touches next week and hang them up for all to see!

P.E.
We finished up our Dodge ball unit by playing Pac-Man and Freeze Dodge ball.  We will begin basketball next week!  We will start with basic skills—passing, dribbling, shooting…

Music
The 3rd/4th Grade Choir sings November 9th at the South Site. (This is ONLY the 3rd/4th grades, so please try to be there!)  We will be singing one song at the 10:00am service. The students need to be there by 9:40 in the choir room to warm up. They may dress nice or wear a Timothy shirt.  If parents have any questions, please contact Mrs. Patterson at lindseyp@timothylutheran.com.  If a your child is not able to attend, please contact her by November 6th. They have been working so very hard, and sound beautiful!  Thank you so much!
