Third and Fourth Grade
News
From the Week
of December 12, 2014
Dear
Parents,
We have had a great week! Things have
been busy, but fun!
CLASS CHRISTMAS GIFTS: Thank you for your
participation and generosity for purchasing gifts for our “adopted”
family. We had so much! We were able to give gifts to four children,
an over-abundance of gifts, and then with the money left over, we were able to
help a family with utility assistance.
Thank you so, so much!
We
will have an all-school Christmas Party on Thursday, December 18th.
We are going to Lunar Bowl from 9:00-11:00. This will be $4.00 per
person. Afterwards, we will be coming back here for lunch. 3rd/4th
grades will also be going to sing at Waterford Nursing Home at 1:30. We
will need drivers for both events. Please email me if you can!
Also, please send in $4.00 for your child (or for you, if bowling!) when you
can. Permission slips came home this week. Thank you! All kiddos are
invited!
We
will have our own version of a classroom Christmas Party the next
day, December 19th! We will watch the Polar Express, have hot chocolate
and snacks, and wear PJs to school! If any home-school friends want to
join us that day, they are most certainly welcome to. We will have a
short Religion lesson in the morning, but then the rest of the day will be
filled with making Christmas cards, watching a movie, and fun! We then get
out at 1:00 that afternoon, and they all yours… ;)
Sunday,
December 21 - Timothy Lutheran Church is putting on a Christmas musical at 6:30 p.m. that students have been
invited to be involved in. We still don’t have the details like what time
students should arrive, where they should go, or what they should wear.
As soon as we know, I’ll let you know!!
Christmas Eve
Your
child is invited to participate in the Children's Worship service on Christmas
Eve at the South Campus at 4:00pm. Historically, there has been a
Saturday morning rehearsal, but we have decided to forgo that this year out of
respect for your busy holiday schedules. Instead, you may bring your
child to the gym at 3:00pm on Christmas Eve for a brief run through before the
service starts. The students have been working very hard with Mrs. Mundt and
Mrs. Patterson to prepare! After the rehearsal, supervision will be
provided for your child(ren) in the Music Room.
Children
from all grade levels are invited to participate. Students in grades 3-8
are invited to read a short Bible passage. Please feel free to contact
Aimee Gorrow, TLD Children’s Choir Director,
if that is something your child would be interested in. aimee.gorrow@lsr7.net ,

Here is what we did this week:
In Religion
this week we talked about being good stewards and using our talents to show
love to God. We talked about recycling
and being wise with our earthly gifts.
This made us feel good, since it is our class that is in charge of
recycling here at school! We thought of
many, many ways to help improve God’s world.
Memory for
next week:
December
16-workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do
their duty.
December
19- (I had the date wrong in the original publication) We will have a short
matching test over the commandments. The
students will just need to match the number of the commandment with the
commandment.
In Language
Arts this week, third graders read a story called ‘The Science
Fair.” We learned some neat science
facts, as well as gained knowledge about how we should trust our friends and
rely on each other. Fourth graders read
a story called “The Earth Dragon Awakens,” which was about the earthquake in
San Francisco in 1905. This was a pretty
frightening story. It was very
well-written and piqued our interest so much!
There will not be spelling words or a new reading story next
week.
Book
Reports: 4th
grade--Their next book report will be over an historical fiction novel. This will be due at the end of January, and
they will need to dress as a character from their story when they present
it! Third graders have until the end of
the quarter to complete their book reports, which are also historical
fiction. They are due January 9th.
Please remind your child to
keep filling in Reading Logs
for December. It is not too late to hand November ones in…
We began reading Little
House in the Big Woods this week, and enjoying Pa’s stories. Our new Author of the Month is Laura Ingalls
Wilder.
In Math this
week, third graders began multiplication!
They have all caught on as well! We
have learned how to make arrays, and how to solve multiplication problems using
0, 1, 2, 3, and 5. Please help them
memorize their math facts by using flash cards or playing math games at home. Fourth grade tested over multiplication this
week and also began talking about expressions and longer multiplication!
In Social Studies
this week, we learned how to read the cardinal directions and use a compass
rose. We have a huge neighborhood map
and had to get friends from Point A to Point B by using directions..with street
names, intersections, and cardinal directions. It was fun!
During Art, we
made you presents! ;)
In P.E. this
week, we learned how to play a basketball game by scrimmaging! This was putting our skills to the test!
In
Music this week, we practiced Christmas songs with Mrs. Patterson
and Mr. Burns for the upcoming church Christmas Program on Sunday, December 21st,
at 6:30 P.M.
This
spring, we will be learning recorder with Mrs. Patterson. This is a wonderful
opportunity for your child to learn notes and values, breath control, and the
fun and responsibility of playing and practicing a musical instrument!
We
will need to make sure that each child has an instrument to bring to class
EVERY Tuesday and Thursday during our recorder unit. If you don’t already have
one from an older child, please send $4.00 to school in
an envelope with “Recorder Money” written on it by Monday, December 15, 2014.
These envelopes will go to Mrs. Fangmann in the office so that we can order
recorders to start January 27th. If your child will be using
a recorder from a previous year, please send it to school on Tuesday or
Thursday next week, so that Mrs. P may make sure it is in good working order
and will work with our recorders. Sometimes recorders from different
manufacturers are made with different pitches, so we want your child’s recorder
to make the same note as the rest of the class. If it is determined that it
will work, you have the option to use it or order a new one.
All
recorders will be the child’s property and he or she will be allowed to keep it
once the school year is over. If you have any questions or concerns regarding
ordering recorders, please contact her at lindseyp@timothylutheran.com.
Thank you!
For Writers’ Workshop,
we continued on our poetry! These “How to Talk to…” poems are so
much fun. Lots of laughs could be heard
in here!
