Have a wonderful L-O-N-G weekend!

Hi, Parents!  It has been another fun week here in 3rd/4th Grade Land!  ;)

Just a reminder:  Graded work will come home today in your child’s Homework Folder.  If he or she chooses, work that is a “C” or below can be redone for half credit back.  This really helps them understand their errors, and have an opportunity to learn from them.  Thanks!

Here is what we have been up to this week:

Religion-We learned more about how we use the Bible to hear God’s voice.  We practiced how to use the Table of Contents, the glossary, and the atlas in both the Bible and in our Religion books.  We looked up many chapters and verses, and are getting pretty good at this!  Today, we discussed Law and Gospel and how it applies to our lives.  Next week, we will focus on 9/11, and remember the promise that God is ALWAYS with us.

 Memory for next week:

Language Arts-3rd grade-We learned all about the courtroom, a fair trial, and a jury this week by reading “The Trial of Cardigan Jones.”  We all loved this story and giggled quite a bit!

4th grade-We read the thought-provoking story entitled, “How Tia Lola Came to Stay.”  We discussed respecting our elders, and how to respect people’s differences and uniqueness.  We had some very good conversations!

As a whole class, we also reviewed how to write complete sentences, making sure it had a noun, verb, and was a complete thought.  We talked about how to write sentences in 3rd/4th grade style, with more detail!   We have been working on DOL (Daily Oral Language) where we use editing marks to correct sentences that are just a mess!  ;)  We have done one together and one our own.  You will see this independent one come home this week.  Each child graded his or her own as we corrected them as a class.  They each got 100%A+ for trying it!  Next week, actual grades will be taken.  They will get better and better at this skill!

Spelling Words for the Week of September 11th:

3rd Grade: lay, real, trail, sweet, today, dream, seem, tea, treat, afraid, leave, bait, screen, speed, yesterday, explain, *monotonous

4th Grade: wait, weight, heard, herd, days, daze, heel, heal, peak, peek, sent, cent, scent, feet, feat, vain, vane, vein, miner, minor, principal, principle, *monotonous

Math- This week, both groups worked with ordering numbers, using place value to round, and solving word problems.  Next week, we will test over Chapter 1!

Social Studies- We discussed cardinal directions, the compass rose, and how to find things on a map.  We played a fun direction game in here too!

 SPECIAL CLASSES

Art- We studied big, beautiful, hot air balloons!  We watched a couple of videos that showed some balloon festivals, and looked at pictures.

Here is one that we watched:

(It’s pretty cool!) Afterwards, we drew hot air balloons and added details.

Next week, we will study primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, create a color wheel with tempera paint, and then begin painting  our balloons!

Computer Lab- We visited the computer lab this week and just got acquainted with the computers!  We discussed computer etiquette and how to take care of them.

Writing- Students wrote about being friends with a tree and/or seeing Earth from an alien’s point of view!  In other words, we used our imaginations this week as we traveled through the writing process!  Some students shared the beginnings of their work in Readers’ Theatre!  (Say this again with a hint of a British accent to get the feel of it in 3rd/4th grade!)  ;)

P.E.-This week we worked on volleyball skills—passing and serving.  We will put these skills together next week for some fun drills and game situations!

All of the students are working hard and having fun!
