Happy 99th Day of School! ;)

Hi, 3rd/4th grade parents!  It’s been a busy week!

*Next week, we are starting our 3rd quarter mission project with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  It is called Hero Squad.  We will be collecting change in our classrooms.  The fundraiser will run January 25-February 5.  Classes will be competing for a pizza party!  Students can collect change and bring it into school, or with the help of you, they can create a page connected to our class page so relatives who live far away can also donate.  Look for a collection sheet and directions as to how to create an individual page coming home this week.  Let us work together to support the mission of this wonderful agency.

Any questions?  Contact Mrs. Otte or look up the website:  www.HeroSquad.org

*Lutheran Schools Week is coming up! Lutheran Schools Week will be celebrated January 24th-January 31st.  Our theme this year is “Sent to Serve,” so every day we will be discussing different ways to serve our God and others.  This is a very special week, where ALL the Lutheran schools around the world celebrate their Lutheran school!  We are so thankful to God that we are able to learn, teach, and witness in our amazing Timothy Lutheran!  At Timothy, we have special dress days and do special activities every day.  This year, because of Covid restrictions, we are not able to do as many things as a whole school, but we are still going to be having some fun!

Here are our list of activities:

Every day, we will have devotions in the gym as an entire school.  We will sit socially distant like we do for Chapel.  These will be led by the 7th/8th grade teacher, Mrs. Self.

Monday 1/25 –Crazy Sock Day!  Theme:  “Jesus – Sent to Serve”

*We will have our kickoff assembly for our 3rd quarter mission project: Leukemia Lymphoma.  The Scholastic Book Fair also begins:  The website is www.scholastic.com/bf/tlsrams.  The book fair will go "live" January 22 and close February 4.  This is also the 100th Day of School!  (Your child does not need to bring anything for this fun day.  We will have 100 Day Centers.)

Tuesday 1/26 – Dress up like your hopeful future occupation!  Theme:  “Pastors and Teachers – Sent to Serve”

*In the classroom, we will be researching jobs and how to share God’s love in everything we do.  We will be writing letters and drawing pictures to thank our pastors, teachers, and workers in this building.

Wednesday 1/27  – Dress up as your favorite team or sport!   Theme: “Serving Together on God’s Team”

*In the classroom, we are going to make cards for our Timothy volunteers (Timothy’s team), local heroes (our local team), and veterans (our country’s team).    Mr. Holland is bringing donuts for everyone!

Thursday 1/28 – Class Dress Theme- 3rd/4th graders voted to dress like animals!  Theme: “Serving in Home and Community”

*In the classroom, we are to going to do some Getting Along activities to help our classroom home.  We will also be discussing ways students can serve at home.  Be ready to enjoy some little helpers!

Friday  1/29 - Travel Day/Tourist Dress  Theme: “Sent to Serve in the World”

*At 1:00, we will have our Talent Show!

**PLEASE do not go out and buy anything for these fun dress days.  Please just use something from home.  (The year that my Annabel chose to dress as an animal, we just dressed her in gray sweats and pinned ears to a stocking cap to make her a koala!)  ;)

Here is what we have been up to in the classroom:

Religion- This week, we talked about the liturgy and all the different parts of it.  We also discussed how when we are worshipping our Heavenly Father, we are worshipping with all of the saints who came before us!  We discussed our own faith stories and shared them.  Please ask your child to share his or hers with you!

 Memory for next week:

1/26- Be able to say the entire Lord’s Prayer.

1/29- Luther’s Evening Prayer : I thank You, my Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day;

 Language Arts/Social Studies-

This week, we learned more about Dr. King and Rosa Parks.  We discussed ways we could use the lessons that they taught us in our everyday lives.

Spelling words for next Friday, January 29th- (for both 3rd/4th) from “Riding in the Cars,” an excerpt from By the Shores of Silver Lake:

steel, steal, lead, led, wait, weight, wear, ware, creak, creek, beet, bear, meet, meat, peek, peak, deer, dear, ring, wring, *conductor

Math- This week, we all worked on solving word problems with patterns, multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000, and beating the clock in mad minutes!

Social Studies-This week, with the help of our Scholastic News, we learned a bit about our new president, Joseph Biden, and our first female vice-president, Kamala Harris.  History in the making!  We were able to view their swearing in on Wednesday morning too.  My class was amazed to know, (which shows my age!), how many inaugurations I have been able to show my classes.  They were a bit flabbergasted to know that I did not have a computer or a television in my first classroom either, so that was not even a possibility!  ;)  I have always viewed that part of my responsibility as a Christian educator is to educate kiddos in history as it is being made.  We prayed for our country and the new administration.  God bless America!

 SPECIAL CLASSES

Art- We finished up our auction project!

Computer- We worked on publishing our stories and papers. Some of the kids have asked if they can work on the publishing of these at home on Google Docs and this is fine with me!  The keyboarding process is slow for some, as they are just learning, so the extra practice would be great!  They know our class’ username and password and can log in at home.

Writing- We shared our persuasive essays yesterday!

Music- The kids are working on songs for National Lutheran Schools Week.  We will record these songs next week to play in church.

P.E. – We began our Jump Roping unit this week!  We learned different ways to jump rope, completed some jump roping relays, and had a “jump off!”

Spanish- The students are learning about the different months and learning how to us Spanish in complete sentences!
