Dear Parents,
It has been an awesome first week of school! I have loved getting to know the third graders, and our two new students, Kayla and Mason! I have also loved seeing my beloved fourth graders. It is so neat for me to see them in this new role, where they are the leaders of the classroom! They have all done a great job of including our new students and showing them what it is like to be a student at Timothy! They do such a great job of sharing Jesus’ love! What a great bunch of kids…
This week has basically been a "getting to know you" type of week for me. On Tuesday, we played several name games and wrote about our summer vacations. After I read some funny stories called The Teacher from the Black Lagoon, and What I Did on Summer Vacation, the kids were able to ask me anything they wanted to about me. We also took a tour around the classroom to learn about everything in it and to go over rules and expectations that I have. The children helped create some expectations of their own. We were actually able to sum them up into four expectations.
1. Try to follow God’s Law.
2. Be respectful to your teacher.
3. Treat others as brothers and sisters in Christ.
4. Have good actions.
We wrote this on poster paper and all signed it!
In Art and Writing, the children wrote Bio-Poems and created face portraits out of craft materials. These are so wonderful! Please take some time to stop by and look at our creations in the hallway.
In Religion this week, we talked about who God is: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the impact He has on our lives. We discussed ways to share His love with all those around us. The children did a wonderful job on their first memory verse! They all recited it to me perfectly! Memory will be every Tuesday and Friday. I will be asking the children to say their memory to me in the morning, usually when they arrive at school. Next week’s verses are:
August 28- If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1
August 31- Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. John 20:31
Spelling and Reading will begin next week! Your child’s spelling list will come home on Mondays. The children will have a pretest every Monday. This will give them a good idea which words to focus on. We will practice these words in the classroom nearly every day. We will put the words in ABC order, put them in sentences, and look them up in the dictionary. On Fridays, the kids will have a post-test over these words. There will also be a challenge word that will come home for your child on Monday to study and learn. He or she will need to know how to spell this word and the definition of it in order to get credit for it on the test. It will only be for extra credit, and will not hinder the grade if it is wrong.
This week we also shared our “bags of five things.” The children loved seeing what the others had brought!
We began math this week with a review of math properties and of missing addends. I also introduced “mad minutes” and problem solvers.” Please urge your child to study his or her math facts so they can become memorized! They can use flash cards, math games, and there are even some fun games that you can play online. My favorite games are at www.arcademicskillbuilders.com.
Today, students will be bringing home their Friday Folders with graded papers from the week, as well as handouts from the office, and upcoming assignments. Their book report forms are in there as well! Third graders will be reading mysteries and fourth graders will be reading Newbery Award winning books. I explained these assignments today, and most of the children found his or her book to read. Please let me know if you have any questions!
I have to apologize that our classroom website is not up to date! My internet is down at home, and some kind of security block here at school has kept me from getting on it. I will figure this out this weekend, and get that updated for you! I took some pictures this week that I want to share with you, as well update the memory work and spelling words for next week. Be on the lookout for these in your child’s assignment book, as they will be there too! Thank you for your understanding.
Next Week:
We will have a yearbook signing after chapel next Wednesday! Students who ordered a yearbook last school year (2011-2012) will finally receive their purchases! We still have some yearbooks available if your child did not order one, but would still like one. They cost $13.
Home school students will join us for the first time on Tuesday of next week! We are very excited to have these friends join us after lunch.
Thank you for being such supportive and great parents! I am excited for a great school year and look forward to working with each of you! One child mentioned to me today, “Ms. Myers, we already feel like a family!” Amen! I believe so too…
God's Blessings on your weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers
