Newsletter from 8-31-12

Dear Parents,

We have had another great week at school! I am so thankful for each one of these students and how hard they are working each day! They are already learning so much! Below is what we have covered in each of the subject areas.

In Religion this week, we have talked about who God is. Our Chapel theme for the year is “I AM,” and this has connected so well to what we are discussing in Religion. We have discussed Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each part of the Trinity is so important to us in so many ways. We are blessed beyond measure to be loved by our God, and to receive His countless blessings! In Chapel this week, we learned about our new Mission Project: Lutheran Malaria Initiative. Our goal is to collect $250 during the month of September to purchase 25 mosquito nets. You can learn more about LMI at www.lutheranmalaria.org

We are also learning the song, “I Am Trusting You Lord Jesus” in class and in Chapel. Memory work for next week is:
September 4- Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. John 6:68
September 7- The Son of God has come and has given us understanding. 1 John 5:20

In Language Arts this week both grades read a new story. Third graders read a story entitled, A Fine, Fine School, and fourth graders read a story that most of you know by the title of Because of Winn Dixie. We learned about pronouns, and finding complete sentences in written text. We also wrote a lot in our journals this week and worked on the process of forming complete paragraphs. We took our first spelling test today and the children did great! Some of the kids even got the challenge word, “mesmerize” correct! I reminded them that they will need to be able to spell the word and put it in a sentence in order to get the extra credit on Fridays! I can tell they all worked very hard at home preparing! Thank you! Next week, I will be sending home more information about Scholastic Reading Counts, with your child’s personal goal. They will need to take quizzes over this amount of books for the quarter. I have had time assess each child and pick a personal goal for him or her. Please encourage your child to read his or her book report book to stay on target. They can keep this book in their backpacks, so they can read it in free time at school too!

In Math this week, third graders began the week by adding and subtracting larger digit numbers, and reviewing borrowing. Later in the week, they were to identify place value and tell the value of a digit in a number. Today, the children began writing three digit numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word from. These terms were brand new to them, and they did so great! Fourth graders reviewed these things from last year, and began talking about periods within numbers, and identifying them to the millions. They also worked with ordering large numbers and adding and subtracting them. We will have our first math test next week in both grades. Mad minutes are going well! Please encourage your child to study math facts at home! Thank you!

I just got access to the website! …and my awesome brother-in-law worked on my computer and internet access at home, so I am good to go! Woohoo! Saying this, this weekend, I will work on updating the website, and putting our awesome pictures and work up on it! Thanks you for your patience!

We began Special Classes this week, and welcomed three home school friends to our awesome classroom mix! Nathan McKeage, a 3rd grader who was with us last year, has returned to join his friends, and we have two new young ladies, 3rd grader Caileigh Gerard, and 4th grader, Ainsley Jo Sullivan. We had a great time getting to know these new friends and had a very fun week!

In Art this week, we learned the term contour and practiced a blind contour drawing where we looked at the object, but not our paper, and as our eyes followed the contours, our pencil moved. It was funny to see our results! We then practiced a modified blind contour drawing where we could look two times while drawing. We finished up with some abstract art where we had a modified blind contour drawing of our friends striking posses. As we finish these, they will be hanging in the hallways for all to see! They are super-cool!

In P.E. this week, we reviewed body movements like skipping, galloping running, hopping, jumping, crab walk etc. with relays and several fun games including hula hoops! We also learned new stretches and ran laps using pacing and then taking our pulses. We will see how we improve throughout the school year as we add more laps and get stronger!

In Writers’ Workshop this week, we learned all of the steps to the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. We are excited to get started writing our stories! We are going to become awesome little authors in here!

In Computer Lab this week, we learned about all of the parts of the computer and how to use them properly. We filled out surveys about computer use and talked about the games that they will be learning/playing this year. We began typing on Type to Learn.

In Music this week, the children learned about proper singing posture and practiced breath control by echoing high, low, ascending, and descending notes. They also discussed class behavior expectations and what we hope to accomplish this year. They are so excited for their year in music with Mrs. Mundt! Everyone enjoyed the book: Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar?, and then they played the Cookie Jar game. This was a great game for learning the names of new friends. It also let us practice keeping a steady beat and speaking with a rhythm. We sang “My God is Greater!” Music is tons of fun!

We also had our first Spanish class this week ! Mrs. Carrasco, our Spanish teacher, will be sending home notes about Spanish once a month. I will always let your child know in their assignment books if he or she has a Spanish assignment as well.

School Picture order forms were sent home. Return completed forms by September 17. If you need a new form, contact Lois Warren in the office. loisw@timothylutheran.com

Thank you for being such supportive parents! This is a great group of kiddos! Have a great, long weekend…

Yours in Christ,

Kim Myers
