Dear Parents,
We have had a great week! One of my highlights that we do every day, is that we have devotions every morning, followed by highs and lows, which is always so wonderful, as I get an insight into the children’s’ lives that I normally would not get the chance to see, but then we have started doing this thing they just call “The Bag.” On the first day of school, the kiddos filled out incomplete sentences about themselves, where they ahd to fill in the blanks with answers. They cut the sentences into strips, and we put them in a bag, and every day, we draw out five, and I read the sentence. The kids then try to guess which one of their friends the statements describe. We have had so much fun with this activity and they look forward to it every morning! It will be a shame to run out… I thought I would share some with you…
“I can’t fly, but I am really good at swimming.” ~Kayla
“If I were planning my favorite meal, t would include hot dogs and pizza!” ~Van
“All it takes to make me happy is to play kick ball!” ~Gavin
“I can’t do soccer, but I’m really good at baseball.” ~Emma
“My most prized possession is my special piggy bank with my name on it.” ~Anna
These are great, and I will share more next week!
This week, on Tuesday, we learned about September 11th, 2001. We watched a short video about this fateful day, and also watched a Reading Rainbow, that showed an interview with a window washer from the Twin Towers. This footage was taken to talk to him about his job. He died in the bombings shortly after, however, but it was neat to see interviews with his family, who talked about how much he loved his job and his country. Reading Rainbow also showed the students from a 5th grade class in New York City who had to evacuate their school, and then 5 months later, was able to go back to their school building. This connected very weel with the children, to see it from peers’ point of view. It was very touching.
This led to a great discussion about God and His love for us. We shared the Bible verse Romans 8: 38-39….and discussed how God will never, ever leave us. We used this verse to illustrate our thoughts of 9-11.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
~ Romans 8: 38-39
In Religion this week, we talked about the Law and the Gospel, and how the Law shows our sin to us, like a mirror. The Gospel, however, is that Good News that God has forgiven our sins through Jesus, who on the cross paid the penalty for us. We also discussed the ways Christians can flourish and grow by learning about the Six Chief Parts of the Small Catechism, meaning the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the Ten Commandments, Holy Baptism, Confession, and the Sacrament of the Altar.
Memory work for next week is:
September 18- For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
September 21- You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. …You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:30-31
In Language Arts this week we discussed how to tell the difference between statements and questions, and learned how to edit sentences that needed those ending marks. Third graders read a story entitled, Destiny’s Gift, and we discussed ways that we could help out in the world as well. Fourth graders read a story called How Tia Lola Came to Stay. This week, I sent home more information about Scholastic Reading Counts, with your child’s personal goal. They will need to take quizzes over this amount of books for the quarter. They can take these quizzes at home or at school and get credit for them. The books in my classroom are labeled with the reading level. Please encourage your child to read his or her book report book to stay on target. They can keep this book in their backpacks, so they can read it in free time at school too! Please encourage your child to keep on reading for their book reports! This book can also be quizzed on. Please let me know if you have any questions about this.
In Math this week, third graders learned how to order numbers and tell whether they were greater than, less than, or equal to another number. They also worked a lot with word problems. Fourth graders also worked with comparing and ordering numbers, as well as revising how to round. We are getting very good at mad minutes!
In Science this week we studied eggs and all the different parts of them and what they do. We talked about how “Chickens Aren’t The Only Ones” that lay eggs, and talked about all other birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish, bugs and a few mammals that lay eggs too!
In Art , we painted our hot air balloons using the colors from the color wheel! Be sure to check out the hallway! Up, Up, and Away….
In P.E. this week, we continued the volleyball unit. The children learned the correct way to serve, and practiced passing with a partner and to a target. Next week, we will scrimmage!
In Writers’ Workshop, we wrote acrostic poems about September 11th. We used the word “REMEMBER.” These are beautiful and hanging in the hallway!
In Computer Lab , we continued the Type to Learn and practiced putting our hands on the home keys, and not looking at our hands as we type. Some of the children are really zooming through this!
In Music this week, we continued working on “Honor You God”, the song we plan to sing in church October 21. We enjoyed singing “Yes, Lord”, “How Great is Our God”, and “Open the Eyes of My Heart”. In Music class, students practiced identifying and drawing whole notes. We had fun singing “Arky, Arky”, an oldie, but goodie. It tells the story of Noah.
Have a fabulous weekend! Thank you for all of your support and prayers!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers
