Newsletter from 9-7-12

Dear Parents,

It has been a neat and fun-filled week at school! This week was one of many firsts and it was exciting! We took our first math test, we painted for the first time this year, third graders looked up verses in the Bible and completed their math on notebook paper, and fourth graders learned how to write the expanded from of numbers in the millions! We are learning so much!

In Religion this week, we worked with timelines and learned about A.D. and B.C. We practiced putting Biblical events in order. We also talked about the Prodigal Son and the story of Mary and Martha. God wants us to be eager to learn His Word, and we shared ways that we can share God’s love with others and how our own faith can grow as well. We dug deep into our Bibles this week and practiced looking things up! This takes some time, but worth it…the Word is so full of grace and knowledge! We practiced the song “I am Trusting You Lord Jesus,” and can almost sing it by heart! We watched a video this week about our new Mission Project: Lutheran Malaria Initiative. Our goal is to collect $250 during the month of September to purchase 25 mosquito nets. You can learn more about LMI at www.lutheranmalaria.org

Memory work for next week is:
September 11- Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it! Luke 11:28
September 17- Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2

In Language Arts this week both grades again read a new story. Third graders read a story entitled, The Trial of Cardigan Jones. This story led us to learn so many new vocabulary words about the courtroom setting. Fourth graders read a story called My Brother Martin. This story was written by Martin Luther King Jr.’s sister, and was a very informative piece about his childhood and upbringing. It shared some of his shenanigans too! Today, I will be sending home more information about Scholastic Reading Counts, with your child’s personal goal. They will need to take quizzes over this amount of books for the quarter. They can take these quizzes at home or at school and get credit for them. The books in my classroom are labeled with the reading level. Please encourage your child to read his or her book report book to stay on target. They can keep this book in their backpacks, so they can read it in free time at school too!

In Math this week, third graders learned how to put numbers up to the ten-thousands in standard, expanded, and word forms. They practiced on it today and will be tested over it next week! Fourth graders worked with numbers in the millions and took their tests today…and did very well! The students are going strong on their mad minutes! Please continue to encourage your child to study math facts at home! Thank you!

We began Science this week! The students are learning all sorts of new terms about animals, and life. We will be bringing home a vocabulary sheet to study from next week. They will need to know these terms for a test in a couple of weeks. I will give your child plenty of notice before this. Next week, we will be studying the life of a chicken and a frog, and investigating eggs!

In Art , we learned about primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, and created a color wheel. We also began a hot air balloon painting project and will continue this next week. Be on the lookout for a brightly colored hallway!

In P.E. this week, we began our volleyball unit! The children learned the correct way to pass, and practiced passing with a partner and to a target.

In Writers’ Workshop, we reviewed all of the steps to the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing, and began writing our first stories! The children are all so excited to share their stories with me and with one another.

In Computer Lab , we began Type to Learn and practiced putting our hands on the home keys, and not looking at our hands as we type. This is such good practice for some! Please encourage this at home as well, so it becomes a habit.

In Music this week, we learned the new songs “Honor You God,” “Every Move I Make,” and our hymn of the month “I Am Trusting You, Lord Jesus.” We also had theory review, where we talked about treble clef, staff, and line notes (E, G, B, D, F).

School Picture order forms were sent home. Return completed forms by September 17. If you need a new form, contact Lois Warren in the office. loisw@timothylutheran.com

Have a fabulous weekend! Thank you for all of your support and prayers!

Yours in Christ,

Kim Myers
