Newsletter-3-28-13--HAPPY EASTER!!!

John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Third and Fourth Grade News
From the Week of March 28, 2013

Dear Parents,
It has been a beautiful week!  This week was fun for us, as we focused on Easter, the death and resurrection of our Beautiful Savior, the amazing world we live in with the sun, moon, and stars, creating hymns from our hearts, and making a fun project for Trivia Night!  See details below!

Religion: This week in Religion, we discussed ways that we can witness to others in all sort of ways, in any location.  We talked about future plans in our lives, and how we can use our jobs as ways of spreading the Good News as well.  We also talked about how one way of spreading the Good News is through Psalms and Hymns.  We studied several famous hymns an d sung them in class.  We have also celebrated Holy Week by talking about and learning about the last days of Jesus.  We listened to a song this week that is very moving, entitled ‘Watch the Lamb,” by Ray Boltz.  Perhaps you are familiar with it?  It tells the Good Friday story so beautifully and from the perspective of Simon from Cyrene, the man that carried the cross for Jesus.  I did not let the children watch the YouTube video that we listened to, as some of it is rather graphic, but they asked that I share it with you, and perhaps they could watch it at home!  Plus, they want to share it and its’ beautiful message with you! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_L0AXVU5Ks

Science: This week we learned about moon and what size it is compared to the earth.  We learned that you could fit four moons across the center of the earth.  This gave the children a good idea of the size of the moon!  We will learn more next week!

School of Economics: Students learned supply and demand this week.  We also discussed how to price items accurately so that they can make a profit.  Next week, we’ll talk about checks and making change, as they’ll need both skills for our trip.  We’re getting in to the big-deal stuff!  Students pay $6 for this trip – money is due by Wednesday, April 3.  All parent slots are now filled.  If you are missing the email about School of Economics and want to refresh yourself on the details of the trip, check out this link: www.signupgenius.com/go/4090E49AAA722A57-school

Math: Third graders began a chapter on measurement!  We learned how to measure to the nearest inch, half inch, and quarter inch.  We also talked about how to determine if something needs to be measured by the foot, yard, or mile.  We discussed capacity and are started to memorize measurements there.  Next week, we will do simple conversions!  Fourth graders are still working very hard on division!  We are completing long division with remainders and learning how to check work with multiplication.  Please keep reviewing these skills at home!

Writing: After studying favorite hymns in Religion, we began writing hymns this week.  They students really wrote form their hearts!  What awesome praises to Jesus for all He has done!  Students turned in their persuasive essays today and we will share these out loud next week in Reader’s Theatre.

Art: We studied the amazing and talented artist, Georgia O’Keefe.  We then studied pictures of flowers, drew them, painted them, and will make a collage.  This is going to be beautiful!

Music:  We sang several songs appropriate for this point in the church year.  We sang “Amazing Grace- My Chains Are Gone”, “Above All” and “Hosanna”.  It was fun to sing an Easter action song, “Ho, Ho, Ho, Hosanna.”  During recorder time, many of us passed our tests and earned belts!  Keep practicing at home!

Other News:
Easter Break is HERE:  Students are dismissed at 1:00 today to begin our Easter Break.  We won’t have school tomorrow or Monday, to honor the Easter weekend.  Have a very Blessed Easter!

Standardized testing results are here!  Students are coming home with an envelope containing their standardized test results.  Please also read the letter from Mr. K. inside that envelope, as it explains Timothy’s philosophy on testing.

Track practice: The first track practice for students in grades 4th-8th takes place next Tuesday, right when students return from break!  If your child is interested in participating, practice runs from 3:45-5 every Tuesday/Thursday.

Mr. Burns: Please continue your prayers for Mr. Burns. He is healing! Please remember that the Spring Pageant (April 13 & 14) has been postponed to the fall.

Book Reports: The children have already begun working on their next book reports!  Forms will be coming home today and we will learn about the projects as a class early next week.  These details will come home then. Third graders will be reading a biography. Fourth graders are reading fantasy books and making windsocks.  I have extended the due date on this one until after Easter—April 2nd. They will then be reading biographies for April and will do the same project as the third graders!

Trivia Night:  It’s coming!  On Friday, April 19, at the south site, our school has its annual Trivia Night.  This is a great fundraising opportunity for our school.  It’s time to get your teams together (tables seat 8) and join in on the fun.  The theme is “Dancing Through the Decades”.  Each class is creating a one-of-a-kind item for the live auction.  Ticket sales begin April 2.  We are accepting new items for the silent auction.  We welcome individual and/or business donations of goods or services.  If you would like to help, contact Amanda Pascoe.  amandap@timothylutheran.com
Ask friends, family, or other school families to join up with you!   We would LOVE to see you there!  Our class is making a beautiful collage in the style of Georgia O’Keefe.  We began working on it to day in art, and it will be fabulous!  Come and bid on it!  J

Enrollment Update from last week: We are SO EXCITED to announce that we have a FULL Kindergarten class (all other applicants will be placed on a waiting list).  Also, first and second grade numbers are such that we can’t keep both groups in one room!  Our intent has always been to have one room per grade, and it looks like we’ll do that for first and second grade next year.  We are in the process of interviewing teaching candidates.  Keep getting the word out about how God is blessing us at Timothy!  We would love to have full classes in all grades!

CCCS Update: Praise God for all of your generosity!  We collected over $250.  This will educate a child for 10 months!  Our class earned the most money for the Children’s Christian Concern Society…helping so many needy students with our donations!  We won the pizza party!  My plan is to have this party next Friday, April 8th.  Will let you know definitely of this next week.  Thank you so, so much for your thoughtfulness!  We begin a new mission project in April, collecting items to make kits for the homeless.  Watch for more details to come.
School Calendar: There has been an adjustment to the school calendar.  Because of our recent snow days, we are extending our school year through Friday, May 24th.  We will have a closing chapel and early release at 1 p.m. that day.

Have a Blessed Easter and a wonderful long weekend… Enjoy time with family!
God’s Blessings!
Love,
Kim Brunkhorst
