Third and Fourth Grade News-- 4/5/13

Dear Parents,

The weather today just makes me smile! What a pretty day! This week we have been able to get the kids out in the breeze and the sunshine during recess and P.E., and it has been so beautiful!

Religion: This week in Religion, we have been learning about Paul and Silas, and about their ministry and faith. It is inspiring to talk about how we, as Brothers and Sisters in Christ, have a job to do as well! Our job is to spread the Good News to everyone, even when we are scared. Jesus will help us fight those temptations to be timid about Him.

Memory for April: The children are learning the Book of the Bible. Please help them practice these at home! They will need to know all of them by the end of April! Thank you!

Science: This week we read several books about the moon and learned about the phases of the moon.

School of Economics: This week, we learned how to write checks and endorse them. This was fun, as we wrote pretend checks out to our friend!  We also practiced making change! This skill was hard for some us, despite learning it earlier in the year during our Math money unit. We will practice again next week! Thank you for sending in your money for this field trip. If you are missing the email about School of Economics and want to refresh yourself on the details of the trip, check out this link: www.signupgenius.com/go/4090E49AAA722A57-school

Math: Third graders are finishing up their first chapter on measurement! This week we talked about conversion and about choosing the right unit to measure items. Fourth graders are reviewing long division with remainders, and will be ready for a test on Monday.

Language Arts: Both groups read fun stories this week! Third graders read about whales and locusts in The Journey: Stories of Migration and fourth graders read the amazing biography of Esther Morris in I Can Do That!

Writing: This week, we began our Biography Rugs! Information about this project came home this week. These are also 4th quarter/April book reports. Both grade levels and home school friends will read a biography of their choice, write down 6-8 important facts about that person, and then create a “Rug” and portrait of their person. Please let me know if you have any questions. The kids are informed and know that this project needs to be created by them!

Art: We continued on our Georgia O’Keefe paintings for the Trivia Night project! I will purchase the frame this weekend. This is going to be beautiful!

Music: We sang many songs about our risen Lord: “Allelu, Alleluia!”, “My Redeemer Lives”, “Hallelujah (Your Love is Amazing)”, “Gotta Get God’s Love”, “Whom Shall I Fear (Angel Armies)” and “I Am Free”. During recorder time, many of us played our solos and passed our tests to earn belts! Please keep practicing at home!

Other News:
Trivia Night: It’s coming! On Friday, April 19, at the south site, our school has its annual Trivia Night. This is a great fundraising opportunity for our school. It’s time to get your teams together (tables seat 8) and join in on the fun. The theme is “Dancing Through the Decades”. Each class is creating a one-of-a-kind item for the live auction. Ticket sales begin April 2. We are accepting new items for the silent auction. We welcome individual and/or business donations of goods or services. If you would like to help, contact Amanda Pascoe. amandap@timothylutheran.com
Ask friends, family, or other school families to join up with you! We would LOVE to see you there!

Pizza Party: Today we had our pizza party celebrating our achievement in raising the most dollars for CCCS. As a school, we collected over $250. Thank you so, so much for your thoughtfulness!

Spring Mission Project: “Help for the Homeless”. Our school is assembling kits for homeless people. For the next 6 weeks, we will ask for specific needed items. This week, we are collecting washcloths and soap (hotel soaps are OK).

School Calendar: There has been an adjustment to the school calendar. Because of our recent snow days, we are extending our school year through Friday, May 24th. We will have a closing chapel and early release at 1 p.m. that day.

Have a fabulous weekend! God’s Blessings!

Love,

Kim Brunkhorst
