Newsletter 4-19-13

Dear Parents,

We have had a very busy, but fun week! Students came home with their mid-quarter grades today! Please look these over with your child, let us know if you have any questions, sign, and return the forms to school by the following Wednesday.

Religion: This week in Religion, we talked about the Lord’s Supper, about sins of commission and omission, and asking God to forgive us for those sins.

Memory for April: The children successfully said their Old Testament books to me this week. We have begun to learn the New Testament books too.

School of Economics: We had a wonderful time at the School of Economics! The kids’ learned so much about supply/demand, about how to work with employees, and customers, and I was so proud of how out school let the light of Jesus shine through their actions! You should be very proud as well! They did a great job! THANK YOU to those of you that were able to help out! You are so much appreciated!

Math: Third graders worked with the metric systems to measure capacity, weight, and temperature. Fourth graders finished up their chapter on long division and will test over it next week. Some of the 4th graders are really rushing through math work, and this is reflective in their midterm scores. Please urge your child to check their work, as well as slow down. It is not a race, and is certainly not awful to have a bit of homework! Thank you!

Language Arts: This week, we focused on commas and using them in our writing. We also practiced a lot of cursive this week! The third graders read about seals, in a book entitled, The Dog of the Sea, and the fourth graders read about Owen and Mzee, the beautiful true story of the unlikely friendship between an orphaned hippo and an old tortoise. (Read it if you have time!!!)

Writing: This week, we had Readers’ Theatre again and shared our persuasive essays. We also worked on our Biography Rugs. They are doing a lot of work at school, which is great, but please make sure they bring their biographies to school, so that they can get the correct information!

Art: This week, we focused on the rain outside and created “Rainy, Stormy Nights.” These paintings used watercolors that we ran and dripped on our papers. Next week, we will add the outlines of people and tress braving the storm! Rain, rain, go away!

Music: We sang the echo song “Lord You Love Me”. It has a fun Cajun feel to it. We practiced “When I Think of You” and “The Word”. It was fun to sing two student requests, “God of Wonders” and “In Christ Alone”.

P.E. We played with the parachute on Tuesday, and began learning bowling techniques on Thursday. The kids are doing a great job at listening and following directions.

Other News:

Book Reports: The children are working hard o their biography book reports. This week in art, we learned the steps to making the “rugs” and the kids are busy reading and taking facts! Please urge them to work on this at home as well! Third grade reports are due on May 15th, and fourth grade reports are due on April 30th.

Cross-Country Meets: First, second, and third graders have been invited to join our track team during their two cross-country meets on April 30th and May 7th. Please let me know if your third grader is interested! Thank you!

Mission Project: Our spring mission project, “Help for the Homeless”, continues. We will assemble kits for area homeless people. This week, we are collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss. Keep in mind, smaller containers work best. All kit items must fit into one gallon size zip lock bag.

During Week #1, we collected washcloths and soap/body wash

Week #2 (April 10-17) – shampoo, deodorant, and lotion

Week #3 (April 17-24) – toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss

Week #4 (April 24-May 1) – disposable razors and shaving cream

Week #5 (May 1-8) – gallon zip locks and granola bars

Week #6 (May 8-15) – catch up week – we’ll send out an email as this week comes closer, telling you what to bring to keep our overall donation numbers even

Trivia Night is tonight! Hope to see you there! Everyone is welcome to bid on auction items. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to bid on our class project, a beautiful collage of flowers. Mrs. Brunkhorst and I are also offering a special item on the silent auction. We will treat a student and a friend to lunch and a children’s play this summer. Come join the fun!

Enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year continues. Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades are filling up quickly. We are incredibly excited that Ronda Krekel will be our 2nd grade teacher! She is a skilled, dedicated and loving educator. She will be a wonderful addition to our school family! You will love her as much as we do. We are blessed!

Cinco de Mayo Performance coming soon: On Friday, May 3rd, students will be performing various activities for your enjoyment. Girls need to arrive at school at 6:15 (putting on skirts takes awhile) and boys need to arrive at 6:30. Boys are instructed to wear blue/black jeans, a white shirt (short- or long-sleeved), and dress shoes (if they have cowboy boots, they can wear these). Girls need to wear their hair in a bun (if possible), a white short-sleeved blouse (no decals or prints on it, please), and shorts to wear under their dancing skirt. They will also need to wear dress shoes. If you have any questions or concerns, direct them to Mrs. Carrasco: trianac@timothylutheran.com

Have a fantastic weekend!

Love,

Kim Brunkhorst
