Third
and Fourth Grade News
From
the Week of September 27, 2013
Hello, parents! The
highlight from our week, was definitely Vladimir, our visitor from Russia, who
came to speak to us on behalf of Operation Christmas Child. Hearing him
talk about all of his experiences, was so, so amazing!!! He has had such trials
in his life, and he had never received a gift before he received his gift from
Operation Christmas Child. His favorite things in the gift were his
SpongeBob toothpaste (he ate it all!), his washcloth, as he had never had one
of his own, and the notebook. He had actual paper to write letters to his
sisters. It was very moving...and then to know that with this, the Holy
Spirit moved within him and he became a Christian! He and his sisters
were later adopted, and he now witnesses his amazing love for Jesus through
this corporation, as well as his example of day-today living! It was such
an inspiration! Hopefully your child shared his story with you… :)
Please send in any items that will help this cause. He gave us the
goal of putting together 100 boxes as a school! We can do it!
Religion- In
Religion this week we talked about Abraham and Isaac, and how God tested
Abraham's faith, and how He blessed him greatly. We also learned the
story of Isaac, Rebekah, Esau, and Jacob. We talked about temptation, not
telling the truth, and why we should want to glorify God with our actions!
We don’t always see the power of Him, but His blessings abound!
Language Arts- The
third graders read “Roberto Clemente, Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates,” which
was a wonderful biography, and really sparked some great baseball
conversations! The fourth graders read “Stormalong,” a tall tale about a
seaman. We had a lot of laughs with this one! We learned about
exclamations and commands, and discussed putting story events in order.
Math- Third
graders have been working with longer addition this week, concerning 3 and 4
digit numbers. Fourth graders have been learning some early algebra!
Today we covered expressions and variables. They are all catching
on so quickly!
Social
Studies- This week, we learned about Missouri regions, rivers, lakes, and
landforms. We will probably finish Chapter 2 next week, and review for a
test the following week. Your child has been making vocabulary cards, in
order to study! Please urge him or her to do this! Next week, we
will also begin our first Science Unit which ties right in, as we will be
getting ready for Earthworks by studying Missouri/Kansas habitats.
P.E.- This
week in P.E. we played a tag game called “I am the Man from Mars!”
Art- We created
contours of cats, and we added beautiful backgrounds! Check them out in
the hallway!
Music- With
Mrs. Mundt and Mrs. Krekel, the children are reviewing whole and half notes.
The children sang their favorite songs, as well as new songs, for
when the kids sing at church on October 20th.
Writers’ Workshop- This
week, we worked on our personal narratives. They are really coming along,
and I have to smile when I hear the children revise with one another and share
their adventures together!
Some of you have given me
your thoughts about having the children complete their published work on Google
Docs. Thank you so much! If they use it, they can work at home, and
on any computer here in the building, without using a flash drive. They
would also be able to email me their papers, and work. Again, please let
me know your thoughts, especially if you do not want your child to have an
email address. We will work around it, and/or use their flash drive.
Thank you so much!
