Third and Fourth Grade
News
December 6, 2013
Hello, Parents! This week has been a great one! Thank you SO
much for your contributions for our children we have “adopted” for this
Christmas season. We had so many gifts of games, toys, and clothes!
What a blessing! I will wrap these this weekend and deliver them
this weekend for Timothy’s Journey to the Manger. Thank you! Thank you
also for worshipping with us this Wednesday when our school helped with the
Advent service. The children did a beautiful job, and we are so
appreciative that you were there to worship and praise God with us!
The students have Christmas musical practice this Saturday (and once more on 12-14) from 9-11 a.m. The performance will be on Sunday, December 15 at 6 p.m.
On Thursday, December 19, all students in grades
K-8 will head to Lunar Bowl for a Christmas Party! If your child is
interested in attending, they will need to wear tennis shoes (in lieu of
getting bowling shoes) and bring in $4. You’re welcome to come and bowl,
too! Each bowler just pays $4. Students may bring money to purchase
snacks, but we’ll leave that up to your discretion. In the afternoon,
students in grades 1-6 will head out to area nursing homes and sing Christmas
carols to their residents. We need drivers for both events. Home-school
students are welcome to stay with us all day!! Notes went home this week.
Please return those as soon as you can. Thank you!
Here is what we have been up to this week:
Religion-This week, we really worked hard on our skit
for the Bible reading. We also talked about Joshua, and coming to the
land of Canaan. We were reminded that God never leaves us! Some of
the students are really struggling with memory work. Please remind your
child to study! We have memory every Tuesday and Friday morning.
Language Arts-This week, we read two amazing stories. Third graders read a biography about Michael Jordan’s childhood, entitled, “Jump!” . Fourth graders read a true story about a pet owl entitled, “The Screech Owl Who Liked Television.” In English, we discussed compound words. We will begin cursive next week! Boy, are we excited! : we Mid-terms came home today, so please check your child’s Friday Folder. I always remind them, that this is just the halfway point, and there is always time to raise up those grades! It is SO hard to believe that we are already halfway through second quarter! We have had such a busy, fun-filled week and a half!
Math-This week, the third graders worked with money and time.
Fourth graders learned what stem and leaf plot was and started
making different types of graphs. We also began working so hard on our School
of Economics studies. We voted on mayor! Our own Kaitlyn Patton,
ran a good, solid race, but in the end, 6th grader, Tori Seever, took the lead.
She will make a great mayor! We had job interviews, and
each child now has a job. Today we met and worked on how much our loans
would be, and what our shop supply lists are….We also talked about and what we
would need to price our items at in order to pay off loans. These are
such great learning tools! We met with our shops and talked about shop
names and started working on our signs.
P.E.-We are continuing to learn basketball skills. Next week we will scrimmage! For some reason, there has been this strange “trend” that has popped up in our class. It is only just a portion of the class, but on P.E. day, a student will choose to wear shoes that are not appropriate for the gym floor, and will have to sit out at gym, or he or she is telling me that “because of my cold, my parents do not want me to participate.” Would you please send in a note or email me if that is the case? That is very fine it f it is, and I completely understand, but I think it may be becoming an excuse! It is difficult and frustrating when six of twenty kiddos sit out and visit while the others are working hard and learning. Thank you so much!
Music- We are working on songs for the Christmas
Pageant and sound great!!!
Writing-This week we had an “all About Me’ project where
the students had to write down the first answer that popped in their heads when
asked a question about themselves. This was fun!
Art-using our writing prompts from Tuesday, we are now taking those
words we wrote down about ourselves and using them to decorate a silhouette of
ourselves. These are beautiful!
Have a great weekend!
Blessings,
Kim
