Newsletter 2-7-14

Third and Fourth Grade News
From the Week of February 7, 2014

Dear Parents,
Hello!  We have had an interesting week!  I hope you were able to enjoy some of the days off with your kiddos…  It was almost like having a weekend in the middle of the week!  Our time here this week, was fun and eventful, though!
On Monday, we celebrated the 100th Day of School!  We had “One-Hundred Day Centers,” including finding 100 words we could read, rolling the die 100 times and tallying up the numbers, flipping a coin one hundred times, doing a 100-piece puzzle, filling in a 100 piece graph, and reading a book about the 100th Day.  We also made portraits of what we may look like when we are 100 years old!  These are so humorous and are hanging in the hallway right next to the portraits we made of our grandparents.  Please come down to our end of the hallway to check them out!
You may have heard, but this week, we have had a lot of visitors in the building.  We are going through the reaccreditation process, so we have had some other adults, fellow teachers, principals, district friends in our building today looking at our program.  The children have been amazing, absolutely welcoming, and on task!  Their behavior has been so great!  They are able to see the kids hard at work in Math, Reading, and Religion.  We introduced our new friends to our Friday Dance today, too!  J They will be in our building again on Monday and then we will have their exit review on Monday afternoon.
We had a wonderful Religion lesson today!  We have been talking about David and Jonathan and their amazing friendship… This led us into a wonderful discussion about what a good friend is and how they treat one another.  There was a segment in our Religion book today, where we had to then think of at least 3 people that popped into our minds that needed a friend.  If they felt that “nudge” about that person, I shared with them that I believe it is truly the Holy Spirit nudging them to step “outside of their boxes” and reach out to that person or people.  I urged the children to be honest…they did not have to show me what they wrote, but we talked about how we all know people who may sit by themselves or play by themselves, or really just don’t seem to have many friends, either here at school, or in our neighborhoods, or even our families.  It was such a blessing for me to see their little light bulbs go off….and for some of them to say, “I felt the nudge!”  This afternoon, I asked them to just give me a thumbs up or down of those of them that tried to connect with someone to let me know if they had succeeded or not!   I got some of both…which is awesome that so many had tried! I am so proud of them!
Next week is already student-led parent/teacher conferences.  I am sorry about my mix-up with the sign-up genius!  If you have not already signed up, or if you want to make sure your sign-up is correct, please check this site:

Thank you so much!  Please let me know if any of those dates do not work for you…
On this same note, the students have been busy picking out work that they are proud of to share with you at their conferences.  There are some that are missing some assignments, so please urge them to get caught up and turn all of those in!  If they seem to be missing some test scores, those may be ones that they have been holding back to share with you!
In math, we have been working with multiplication!   The third graders have learned 0-3 and the fourth graders are working with rounding and estimating products.  I cannot stress enough to the children that they practice their math facts at home!!!! This week was tough for the 4th graders who do not have theirs memorized.  Their assignments took while to complete, especially now that they are getting into more specialized, detailed work.  At the end of the year, we will celebrate all of the students that have memorized their facts with a Winstead’s party!  They can do this if they put their minds to it!  Thank you SO much for your help with this!
Reading and Spelling tests over this week’s words and stories will be on Tuesday.  We will not have a new story or words next week.
We have finished up chapter 3 in our Missouri History books this week and will test over this material on Friday.  Study guides and flash cards will come home on Monday.  Your child will be working on studying the people in the text as well as dates of events.
Valentine’s Day is next Friday!  We will have a party in the morning.  I will have some fun valentine centers, and math centers for the students.  Because the students have also earned a STAR party for awesome behavior, we will also watch a movie!  Each child should bring a Valentine for each member of the class.  (I have included a list of the children below.) Thank you!  Also, if you have an empty tissue box at home, please send one to school.  I have been collecting them at school too, so we should be okay, even if you do not have one!
Achievement tests are coming up!  These will be February 24th-28th.  The testing will be in the mornings from 8:30-12:00 every day.
Timothy is also offering an Education Night to any interested families on February 27.  The focus of this night is sex education.  We separate the kids according to age and gender, keeping the students with their parents.  This is meant to help you discuss the changes your child will be (or already is) experiencing in a Christian yet factual manner.  We use materials supplied by CPH, which are available for preview as you determine whether or not your family is interested in attending.  More information will come home prior to this night.
Because of our snow day this past Wednesday, we have rescheduled Morning with Mom (donuts and fun!) for Wednesday, February 19.  The fun starts at 7:45.  Hope to see you there!!

Here is what we did in our special classes this week:
Art-woven paper hearts
