Newsletter 3-7-14

Third and Fourth Grade News
From the Week of March 7, 2014

Dear Parents,
We have had a fun week.  J  Despite the snow day on Monday, it was great to get back on schedule.
We had Jump Rope for Heart yesterday, and it was a HUGE success! The children had a lot of fun, and we were able to jump as a school for one whole hour.  This weekend, I will tally up the money we donated to the American Heart Association.  I know it is over $1000!  That is so awesome!   I will send out the totals on Monday.  Your child’s prizes will come in the mail soon.  THANK YOU for all of your support!
Daylight savings takes place this weekend. We spring ahead one hour!
Enrollment is still underway! It's exciting to see our numbers increase. If you haven't gotten your paperwork in, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible.
The third quarter already ends next Friday! Goodness!  Full time students dismiss at 1:00 and report cards will be coming home soon!
During Religion this week, we talked about Solomon and the beautiful temple he built for God.  We discussed the history of the temple and about the Ark of the Covenant.
Language Arts- This week, we have learned quite a few new cursive letters and are creating them beautifully!  Soon, there will be a display of some out in the hallway….  In Reading, third graders read a story about trees and their life cycles, called “A Tree is Growing” and fourth graders read “The Right Dog for the Job.”  These were both tougher stories with many facts.
Math- Boy, are we chugging long!  Third graders have been busy working with all of their multiplication facts this week.  We will multiply three numbers and begin division next week.  We even watched the Schoolhouse Rock videos!  Fourth graders learned how to multiply 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers today!  I love when I see those light bulbs go on!  Again, they are seeing the importance of memorizing math facts.  Mr. K even visited with me today, sharing the importance.  Please, please, please encourage your child to practice these math facts at home:  flashcards, computer/tablet games, verbal quizzing…The better they know them, the better they will do with these more difficult math problems at school, and the higher their self-esteem will be too!  Thanks!
Science-We learned all about live sponges this week, and watched several videos of them under the sea.  We experimented to see how natural sponges and artificial sponges are different.  Today we learned about mushrooms.
In P.E. this week, we focused on jump roping skills.
During Writing this week, we talked about expository papers, and how our first paper will be about you, MOM!  Only several of the children finished this interview.  If they have not, they will be coming home with it today, and need to work on that.  I will also put a link online.  J
Please take the time to answer several questions for your child.  I am hoping this leads to come great conversations!  Thank you!
During Art yesterday we learned the value scale with tints and shades of the same color!  We then painted our “wild things” and hung them around our classroom.  They are awesome!
In Music, we are continuing to work with the spring musical music and parts.
