Newsletter 8-29-14

Dear Parents,
We have had another great week at school!  I am so thankful for each one of these students and how hard they are working each day!  They are already learning so much!  Homework is new to some of the children.  Please always check to see if your child has work, as they get used to this process.  Thank you for your help with this!  Below is what we have covered in each of the subject areas.

In Religion this week, we have talked about who God is.  We have discussed Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each part of the Trinity is so important to us in so many ways.  We are blessed beyond measure to be loved by our God, and to receive His countless blessings!

In Language Arts this week both grades read a new story.  Third graders read a story entitled, A Fine, Fine School, and fourth graders read a story that most of you know by the title of Because of Winn Dixie.  We learned about pronouns, and finding complete sentences in written text.  We also wrote a lot in our journals this week and worked on the process of forming complete paragraphs.  We took our first spelling test today and the children did great!  Some of the kids even got the challenge word, “mesmerize” correct!  I reminded them that they will need to be able to spell the word and put it in a sentence in order to get the extra credit on Fridays!  I can tell they all worked very hard at home preparing!  Thank you!  Please encourage your child to read his or her book report book to stay on target.  They can keep this book in their backpacks, so they can read it in free time at school too!  During English this week, your child took a test over nouns.  This test was for me to see where they are in their understanding.  You will see this test again in a few weeks as we learn more about them… J
We had our first visit to the Library on Tuesday, and met Mrs. Stout!  We are going to have so much fun in Library this year… Books that are checked out are due the following Tuesday.  If your child needs his or her book for another week, they just need to re-check it out.  Thank you!

In Math this week, third graders began the week by adding and subtracting larger digit numbers, and reviewing borrowing.  Later in the week, they were to identify place value and tell the value of a digit in a number.  Today, the children began writing three digit numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word from.  These terms were brand new to them, and they did so great!  Fourth graders reviewed these things from last year, and began talking about periods within numbers, and identifying them to the millions.  They also worked with ordering large numbers and adding and subtracting them.  We will have our first math test next week in both grades.  Mad minutes are going well!  Please encourage your child to study math facts at home!  Thank you!

We began Special Classes this week, and welcomed five home school friends to our awesome classroom mix:  Carter Davis (3rd grade), Alayna Borchers (3rd grade), September Watts (3rd grade), Evan Hyde (3rd grade), and Tanner Scott (4th grade)!  We had a great time getting to know these new friends and had a very fun week!

In Art this week, we learned the term contour and practiced a blind contour drawing where we looked at the object, but not our paper, and as our eyes followed the contours, our pencil moved.  It was funny to see our results!  We then practiced a modified blind contour drawing where we could look two times while drawing.  We finished up with some abstract art where we had a modified blind contour drawing of our friends striking posses.  We will finish this up next week! As we complete these, they will be hanging in the hallway for all to see!  They are super-cool!

In P.E. this week, we began volleyball skills!  We learned how to correctly pass, set, and move.  Next week, we will learn serving, and try some scrimmages.  We also learned new stretches and ran laps using pacing and then taking our pulses.  We will see how we improve throughout the school year as we add more laps and get stronger!  There were several students that forgot their tennis shoes this week, and were not able to participate.  Please be sure to send shoes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Thank you!

In Writers’ Workshop this week, we learned all of the steps to the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.  We are excited to get started writing our stories!  We are going to become awesome little authors in here!

In Computer Lab this week, we just tried out our computers by playing games.  Next week, we will work with Typing Web, which enhances typing skills.

In Music this week, we met Mrs. Patterson!  She is so excited to be working with the kids.  This week, they learned names, practiced steady beats, and used actions to tell a well-known story to music.

We also had our first Spanish class this week ! Mrs. Carrasco, our Spanish teacher, will be sending home notes about Spanish once a month.  If you get to the store this week, you may want to grab another notebook for her classroom.  Thank you!  I will always let your child know in their assignment books if he or she has a Spanish assignment as well.

We handed out a flyer for boy scouts on Tuesday.  We have now found out that Timothy has their own Cub Scout pack!  Here is the contact info.

School picture forms are September 15th.  The form is coming home today.  Please check Friday Folders!  Home school friends, please come too!  You will get this form on Tuesday.  Thank you!
