Dear Parents,
It has been a neat and
fun-filled week at school! We are
learning so much!
In Religion this week, we worked with
timelines and learned about A.D. and B.C.
We practiced putting Biblical events in order. We also talked about the Prodigal Son and the
story of Mary and Martha. God wants us
to be eager to learn His Word, and we shared ways that we can share God’s love
with others and how our own faith can grow as well. We dug deep into our Bibles this week and
practiced looking things up! This takes
some time, but worth it…the Word is so full of grace and knowledge!
Memory work for
next week is:
September 9-
Jonah
Micah
Nahum
Habakkuk
Zephaniah
Haggai
Zechariah
Malachi
September
12-Recite all of the OT books
In Language Arts this week both
grades again read a new story. Third
graders read a story entitled, The Trial of Cardigan Jones. This story led us to learn so many new
vocabulary words about the courtroom setting.
I shared with them that I have jury duty in a few weeks, and what all
that will entail. Fourth graders read a
story called My Brother Martin. This story was written by Martin Luther King
Jr.’s sister, and was a very informative piece about his childhood and
upbringing. We had some great
discussions about segregation and discrimination. The story shared some of M.L.’s shenanigans
as a child too!
Please
encourage your child to read his or her book report book to stay on
target. They can keep this book in their
backpacks, so they can read it in free time at school too!
In Math this week, third graders
learned how to put numbers up to the ten-thousands in standard, expanded, and
word forms. They tested on this
knowledge today. Fourth graders worked
with numbers in the millions and took their tests this week as well. The students are going strong on their mad
minutes! Please continue to encourage
your child to study math facts at home.
Today we practiced how to use flash cards to our advantage. Here are also some fun websites that the kids
can use on the computer or tablets:
We began Science this week! The students are learning all sorts of new
terms about animals, and life. We are
studying living things and their needs.
We will investigate plants and root systems, as well as eggs. We will be bringing home a vocabulary sheet
to study from next week. They will need
to know these terms for a test in a couple of weeks. I will give your child plenty of notice
before this.
Please
remind your child that he or she can redo work and turn it in for half
credit. I encourage this! Thank you!
In Art , we completed our People
Contour Drawings. These are hanging in
the hallway. Please come and check them
out!
In P.E. this week, we continued our
volleyball unit with learning how to serve, and how to direct our passes to a
target. Next week, we will put all of
the skills we have learned together and try a scrimmage or two!
In Writers’ Workshop, we reviewed
all of the steps to the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing,
and publishing, and began writing our first stories! The children are all so excited to share
their stories with me and with one another.
In Computer Lab , we began Typing
Web and practiced putting our hands on the home keys, and not looking at our
hands as we type. This is such good
practice for some! Please encourage this
at home as well, so it becomes a habit.
In Music this week, we talked about melody and demonstrated the shape of a tune
with actions.
Please make sure you check out Mrs.
Fangmann’s email from earlier today, as it discussed signing up for the Fall Fun
Fest parking, school pictures, and ordering t-shirts. Thank you!
