Third and Fourth Grade News
From the Week
of October 24, 2014
Dear Parents,
It has been a great week! Hasn’t
it just flown by? The highlight of this
week has definitely been the Royals…and I hope when you read this, they are on
their way to another win!!! We have
made a lot of references to baseball this week—during Chapel, when the 5th/6th
grades talked about kings and royalty…in P.E., when we discussed positions of
the game and good sportsmanship, and when we had Zachary as our Amazing Ape,
who wants to be a Royals baseball player someday! J
We are celebrating a Baptism next week, and we are so excited! Gabby, and her brother Donovan, and sister,
Gracie, will be getting baptized during Chapel next Wednesday. Please include them in your prayers as we
celebrate this awesome occasion!
Our fall party (for all
students) is next Friday, October 31st. An online permission slip was sent out last
week. Please let me know if you
have any questions, or have trouble signing up.
We are excited to head out to Memaw’s again for a hayride, a scavenger
hunt, and lots of fun! Please send in
$2.00 for a pumpkin! Thanks!
It has been wonderful
meeting with each of you during parent/teacher conferences. It is fun for me, as I have gotten to know
each of these children so well, to see you them “in” you! Please know you can always contact me with
any concern or question that you may have.
Thank you for sharing them with me every day. I am blessed to be their teacher!
The graded work coming
home this week is from 1st quarter.
Please remember that your child can “redo” assignments that they did
poorly on to receive half credit. These papers will not be able to be
redone, as they were from the previous quarter, but next week, (with 2nd
quarter papers) please remind your child to take advantage of this! Thank you!
Our service project for
this semester is Operation Christmas child.
A note from Mrs. Fangmann came home yesterday with all the details…but
our goal is to pack 120 boxes of supplies to help children in need and share
the Gospel message. Please bring
supplies to school, or donate a “full” box.
Thank you SO much! I have
attached the note as well.
The Blue Springs
Optimist Club visited us today and gave dictionaries to all the 4th
graders. This is something they do for
all the 4th graders in Blue Springs, and something for the 3rd
graders to look forward to next year. There
is a note in your child’s Friday Folder about this. J
Basketball
will be beginning in November! Each student, grades 4th-8th,
can participate on a team! The boys’ teams (4th/5th/6th
and 7th/8th) are coached by Mr. Nathan Parker and
practices will be on Thursday evenings at 7:00 and Sundays at 3:00 (practices
begin on 11/6.). The girls’ teams (4th/5th/6th
and 7th/8th) are coached by Mr. Ed Kuerschner and Mr.
Jeff Mundt and practices are after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:45
(practices begin 11/4). Games begin in December and are typically on
Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Please let me know if your child is
interested by emailing me or letting me know by Monday. Thank you so
much!
Here is what we did
this week:
In Religion, we again
talked a lot about Martin Luther, and discussed why the Reformation was
important. We discussed the phrase… “By grace alone, by faith alone, and by Word
alone.” We talked about how God is our
fortress and then created little fortresses at school. We are beginning to learn the hymn, “A Mighty
Fortress is Our God.”
Memory work for next week is:
October 28-THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT
You shall not murder. What
does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or
harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.
October 31-THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT
You shall not commit adultery.
What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we lead a
sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love
and honor each other.
In Language
Arts this week, the third graders read a story called “harvest Birds,”
and the fourth graders read a story entitled, “Me and Uncle Romie.” Both were great stories about families and
relationships. We also worked with
verbs, finding them in sentences, and writing sentences with them.
In Math,
third graders tested over subtracting larger numbers, and began their unit
about collecting and organizing data in graphs, charts, etc. Fourth graders tested over elapsed time, and
began their chapter about finding mean, median, and mode.
In Science
this week, we read more about animals and their habitats. We worked a lot with recalling information and
working in scientific groups.
During Art,
we made fall Halloween pictures with watercolor and construction paper. Check them out in the hallway… We will create
Luther’s seals next week!
In P.E.
this week, we played Rapid Fire and Freeze Dodgeball, both dodge ball
games. We had to practice some great
sportsmanship, and had some struggles, but learned some lessons along the
way.
For Writers’
Workshop/ Computer Lab, we continued writing personal narratives, and
typing them up. Many students are getting completed. We will share these during Readers’ Theatre
next week.
In
Music, we played instruments and finished jazz
syllables. We
continued learning our song for our Sunday morning performance on November 9th
at the South Site. We will be singing one song at the 10:00am service. The
students need to be there by 9:40 in the choir room to warm up. They may dress
nice or wear a Timothy shirt. If parents have any questions, please
contact me at Mrs. Patterson at lindseyp@timothylutheran.com.
If a your child is not able to attend, please contact
her by November 6th.
