Newsletter 10/3/14

Third and Fourth Grade News
From the Week of October 3, 2014

Dear Parents,
Hello!  It has been a great and busy week!  I had jury duty on Monday, and Mrs. Carrasco subbed for me.  I was SO thankful to be back on Tuesday!

All Students:

Our fall party is Friday, October 31st.  A Sign-Up Genius was sent home today.  Here is the link:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4dadab2da7f58-fall
We are headed out to Memaw’s house for a tractor ride, a scavenger hunt, games, and playing.  Then we will head down the road to an old schoolhouse for lunch and our party.  What fun! Please let me know if you have any questions.
During Art , we painted color wheels, mixing the primary colors to make secondary and tertiary colors.  We then viewed some pictures of hot-air balloons, created our own on paper, and painted them with the colors we had just mixed.  These are hanging the hallway….Come and check them out!
In P.E. this week, we played Four Quadrants, which is a variation of Dodge Ball.  They all love this game, and the teamwork it takes!
For Writers’ Workshop, we wrote Hinky Pinkies!  Ask your child what these are… :)  We had so much fun creating them, illustrating them, and making each other laugh!
For Computer Lab this week, we remained in the classroom to work on our poems.
In Music this week, we played with instruments and learned a chant called “The Woodpecker.”
Full-Time Students:
Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for October 23rd and 24th.  I look forward to meeting with each of you!  The Sign-up will come home next week!
In Religion, we discussed the amazing attributes of the Holy Spirit.  We had a lot of discussion about He sanctifies us and makes up holy.
Memory work for next week is:
October 7-What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name,
October 10-but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.

In Language Arts, third graders read a story entitled, Robert Clemente, about the famous baseball player that died so tragically.  Fourth graders read a tall tale about Stormalong, a brave seafaring giant of a man.  It was a fun story! Fourth grade book reports were shared today and they were so very cool! Check out the new book covers hanging in our reading classroom! Fourth graders got their book report information about their second report.  They need to read a book with an animal as the main character and make a Brown Paper Bag Report.  Look for the details that came home!   Third graders need to read a mystery book and have their reports completed by October 17th!
In Science this week, we reviewed the job of cells and did work in our activity books.  When our School of Economics unit is over, we will have more time to spend on Science!
In Math, third graders learned how to subtract longer numbers using regrouping.  We also worked with numbers that had a couple of zeroes.  They are doing well!  Math tests will come home today.  Fourth graders worked with balancing equations and with using tables to solve word problems.
In Social Studies, students have worked on loan applications, supply lists, and pricing guides for our trip NEXT FRIDAY.  We will wrap up our studies next Wednesday before taking our trip on Friday.  The field trip costs $13. Please bring this in by next Friday.

We had our Star Party today for good behavior!  Thank you for the yummy treats!
