Third and Fourth Grade News

Dear Parents,
Thanksgiving is just around the corner…and I want you to
know how thankful I am for you and all your support this school year! Mid-terms will be coming home on
Tuesday. It is hard to believe that we
are already halfway through second quarter!
We have had such a busy, fun-filled week, and our short week next week
will not be any different! This week, we learned so
much about the first Thanksgiving and all that there is to be thankful for…We
had amazing conversations in our classroom that centered around loving one
another, forgiving one another, and being thankful for the many gifts that we
often do not usually even think of.
Here is what we did this week:
In Religion,
we discussed how God made man in His image, and how we should take care of
ourselves. We also discussed angels and
their role in Jesus’ life, as well as in our lives. These were very interesting conversations! We did not have memory this week, (my
error!), but will have memory next Tuesday:
November 25- betray him, slander him, or hurt
his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in
the kindest way.
In Language Arts and Social Studies this week, we began our unit about the First
Thanksgiving, and we will finish this up with the culmination of our feast on
Tuesday. We have been learning all about
the Pilgrims voyage on the Mayflower, their settlement in Cape Cod, and the
Wampanoag Indians. Our Spelling and
vocabulary words this week were words from the story On the Mayflower. We also shared the story Across the Wide,
Dark Sea. We read both of these
stories this week with partners and as a class, and did several activities with
them. We also talked about how the
Pilgrims and Indians lived and what they wore.
We “bartered” with friends and built pretend Pilgrim housing. Please ask your child all the new
facts he or she learned about Pilgrims and the Wampanoags this week! We are excited for our feast! Thank you so much for your help with
this! Each year, it is such a fun time
and learning experience for our class! Please
just send in your dish with your child on Monday morning…I will use our “next
door classroom” as our buffet area!
Information
for your child’s book reports came home a few weeks ago, as well as the
historical fiction (3rd grade) and the fantasy (4th grade) book he or she has
begun to read. Please remind your child to read at home. Thanks! Third graders
have until the end of the quarter and fourth graders have until the end of the
month! Work hard!
In Math this week, 3rd
grade learned how to make tally tables, read pictographs and bar graphs, and
how to make graphs of our own. 4th grade has been working with
double bar graphs, circle graphs, and distinguishing when to use each type of
graph.
During Art, we made
Native American drawings that look like they are on real leather. These are hanging in the hallway. Please come and check them out!
In P.E. this week, we continued learning basketball
skills. We learned how to shoot free
throws and how to incorporate shooting and dribbling. Next week, we will learn how to do layups,
and how to work on offense
and defense. We will continue with this
unit throughout November.
For Writers’ Workshop/Computer
Lab, this week, we had some fun with November/Thanksgiving Mad Libs,
and finishing up our other written work.
In Music this week we concentrated on the songs that
we will be sharing at the Advent service on December 3rd! We sound so beautiful! 3rd-8th grades are
honored to be reading the Scripture verses, singing songs, performing skits,
and participating in the offering and prayers—all parts of the services.
Please let me know SOON if your child will be able to participate… The services
are December 3rd at 5:00 and 7:15.
