Newsletter 2-20-15

Dear Parents,
We have had another great week, and as always, super-busy!

Reminders:
  • Achievement Testing is next week! (Feb. 23-27)  Home-school families are welcome to come each day for this testing too!  We will be testing just in the mornings, beginning about 8:45, and will finish each day around noon.  In the afternoons, (M/W/F only, since we’ll still have specials classes on Tu/Th), we will have Religion, D.E.A.R. Time, continue on our new Science unit, and also get the kids working on our Trivia Night live auction item.   There will not be spelling, reading, or math classes next week, so we will not have a lot of homework at all!  (They will get plenty of all that on the achievement tests!)  For your child’s best success, you may want to consider the following:
*A good night’s sleep!  This is the week to get lots of rest!
*A good breakfast!  A hungry tummy can be really distracting.
*Healthy snacks - students are welcome to munch on something healthy between tests to keep up their energy and focus.
*Water – each child can bring in a water bottle to keep on his or her desk.  Keeping your brain hydrated is a smart idea, too!
*Activities for fast finishers – their book report book, another chapter book, crossword puzzles, or magazines—nothing that will be distracting to other students.
*If you would like to send in peppermints for your child, or for the whole group, please feel free to do so.  Some research has shown that peppermint stimulates the brain for better memory and more alertness.  J

  • Enrollment forms have been issued to all current students.  Enrollment will open up to new families soon.  Please send your forms back in as soon as possible to reserve your spot for next year!

  • Our ECC and School are sponsoring the Lenten supper on Wednesday, March 4.  We will be serving pizza, salad, and cookies.  If you are willing, we would like a $5 donation toward costs, OR dozen cookies.  We will have student artwork on display for our congregation to see.  We’re excited for this opportunity to be more visible to our church!  Thank you for your help!!

  • Aside from the class trivia art project, which we will be working on next week in school art, our class is sponsoring a STL Cardinals basket!  If you are able and willing, you can send in anything to go in this basket that has anything to with the Cardinals, St. Louis, birds, etc., anything will be fine!  Thank you for help with this…and I would be open to ideas too!

Here is what we have been up to:
On Thursday, Delta Dental visited us, to put on a short play about dental health care.  It was cute!  They gave each child a bag of dental goodies.  Be on the lookout  for this!
In Religion this week, we begun dissecting the Lord’s Prayer and talking about the different reasons why we pray and the power of prayer.  I shared with the children a lesson that my mom taught me so many years ago...and it has always stuck around.  J  First, many of our prayers, because we are sinful and greedy people, are “help me” prayers.  God wants to hear those, but often times we just leave it at that.  My mom always said that she tries to begin each prayer with that of “thanksgiving” first, that way, we are remembering all of our blessings before our troubles.  I shared with the kiddos, that while I still fail miserably at that sometimes, that it now has become a habit for me to begin my prayers with “thank you.”  God is so good to us!!!  We do not have memory work for next week.
In Language Arts this week, we also read two amazing stories: “A Tree is Growing” (which directly ties to our Science!)  and “Moon Runner.”  We learned how to write the cursive letters I and J.  We have continued to rad about Ramona and her antics in “Ramona and Her Father.”  Please work on getting February Reading Logs in next week.  Thank you!

During Math his week, third graders learned the words expression and equation, and worked with dividing by 0 and 1.  They also began solving word problems with division.  Fourth graders had a tough week!  They learned how to divide with remainders and how to divide larger numbers.  This was tough, but as I write this, ALL of them have caught on.  Thank you for your extra work at home!  Again, both groups, please keep practicing those math facts…our Winstead’s Trip in May is quickly approaching!

We will begin our next unit in Science next week, and are learning all about plant and animal life cycles.  There is a ton of new vocabulary to learn.  Your child should be bringing home vocab cards to review and study!

Here is what we did during Specials this week:
Art-we created starburst hearts!  These are in the hallway.  Our Martin Luther King Jr. portraits will be on display at the Lenten dinner and then will come home next week.
Music-we practiced our recorders and had our third and fourth Recorder Karate sessions.  They are doing great!  Please urge your child to practice at home…
P.E.-we had fun with the parachute.  Please ask your child about popcorn, washing machine, and tent
Writing-We continued writing persuasive essays. Many of them are on the publishing step now!
Spanish-They are getting ready for Cinco de Mayo.  Yesterday, the girls all got fitted for beautiful skirts!  They will have a vocab quiz on Tuesday.
