Newsletter 12-11-15

Hello, parents!  We have been very busy, but having SO much fun and learning SO many new things!  Below, I am going to give you a quick rundown of next week, so you will be aware of all that is happening.  Thank you for taking the time to read this!

This Weekend/Next Week:
Saturday, December 12th:  Christmas Musical rehearsal in the school auditorium from 9:00  - 11:00 am

Monday, December 14th:
All Students:  We will leave school at 9:00 to go to see the play “The Best Little Christmas Pageant Ever,” by Barbara Robinson, at Theatre of Young America, which is inside Union Station, downtown K.C.  It begins at 10:00 and we will be back by noon.  We have 7 drivers that signed up, and all spaces are full.  I have not heard from some of the homeschool students as to whether they are going, though, so please just let me know!   I do not have money from quite a few students.  Please send in or bring $5.50 on Monday.  Thank you so much!  That afternoon, we will be working on Science, writing projects, and Christmas gifts.  ;)

Tuesday and Wednesday will be “normal” days, but we will not have spelling words or reading selections.  We will be using our Language Arts time to study several different Christmas stories and we will also focus on writing our persuasive essays!  We will have a few math lessons in there too, finishing up our units on simple multiplication, and testing over them.  Religion class everyday will be focused on the birth of our Savior, and learning/practicing Christmas hymns.  J

Thursday, December 17th:
All Students:  We will have our bowling Christmas/Caroling Party!  We will leave school around 8:45, bowl at the Lunar Bowl in Blue Springs, and then return around 11:30, just in time for lunch.  Students’ bowling is paid for, (Thank you, PTL!), but if you would like to bowl, please bring $6.00.  A paper permission slip was sent home last week, so please sign and return this so we know your child has permission to go and if you can drive.  We have heard from quite a few of you!  We will be back at school to eat lunch, and then we will head to Benton House at 1:00 to sing Christmas carols to the people that reside and work there.  This is such an awesome way to witness about Jesus!  J  We will back to school by 3:00.  What a fun day!

Friday, December 18th
Full-Time Students Only, please:  We will have our Polar Express Party!  Please allow your child to wear pajamas to school, but please send tennis shoes and a coat.  We will be having recess and lunch in the gym.  They can bring one extra item too—either a pillow, blanket, or stuffed animal, but not all three, please!  We will be reading the book Polar Express by  Chris VanAllsburg and then watching the movie based on the book.  We will have hot chocolate and snacks.  If you would like to send in extra goodies, that is always welcome!  J We dismiss at 1:00 that day for Christmas break!

Saturday, December 19th:  All-Students--Christmas Musical rehearsal in the school auditorium from 9:00 -11:00 am

Other News:
*Our school did an amazing job collecting for Operation Christmas Child.  We put together 154 boxes!!!  (We beat our goal!)  THANK YOU for all of your support, prayers, and love!  Overall, as Timothy’s South Site was a collection center for OCC, there were 1,415 boxes collected during collection week!!!  Isn’t that amazing?!   These boxes have all been sent to one of eight processing centers where they will be prepared for shipment to Mexico.
Please keep the children who will be receiving these boxes in your thoughts and prayers as we enter the Christmas season.

*Thank you for those of you that were able to contribute money and/or gifts for the children that are less fortunate.  Our class brought in $47.12 and had several gifts, an awesome marker set, toys cars, and a doll.  We wrapped these today and made cards telling them about the love of Jesus.  These will be presented in church on Sunday, December 13th.  THANK YOU!

*Grade 3rd-6th are going to be completing Science projects and having a Science Fair in late February.  Mrs. Stack and I met this week to discuss setting one up and we are all so very excited!  She has a lot of experience in this area, so I will be learning so much from her!  J  We will begin work on this when we return from Christmas break.

Here is what we have been up to at school:

Religion-We discussed Joshua and Gideon and leading the people of Israel into the Promised Land and crossing the Jordan River. Those Israelites continued to grumble, just like we do!

Math-Third grade learned how to multiply with 9’s this week, and also how to multiplication to solve word problems.  We will finish up this chapter next week.  Fourth grade tested over Chapter 9 this week.  They had learned about expression, equations, variables, and how to find the math rule in word problems.  Please remind your child to study their math facts!  We are head-over-heels into mad minutes!

Language Arts- Third grade read “The Science Fair” this week, which is such good timing because we are planning Timothy’s first Science Fair, and it led to some GREAT discussions!  Fourth graders read, “The Earth Dragon Awakes,” which is a historical fiction story about the San Francisco earthquake.

P.E.- This week in P.E., we continued to talk about basketball --passing and dribbling!

Art- We created Christmas cards for shut-ins and for you!  Your child will be sending these new shut-in friends cards during this school year.  What a wonderful way to share God’s love!

Writers’ Workshop/Computer Time- We discussed persuasive essays and all got such a great start on them.  We will continue this writing next week.  I am eager to read them—what great ideas!

Music- With Mrs. Pennington, we practiced the Advent and Christmas songs, listed to the story of “The Nutcracker,” and listed to Tchaikovsky ’s musical ballet.  We learned so much!
