Newsletter 1-15-16

Hello, Parents!  We are well into our third quarter of school now!  Report cards came home with your child this past Wednesday.  Please make sure you let me know if you have any questions.  Students can continue to correct papers and turn them in for half credit, only if they are below an “A.”  There is a bunch of graded work coming home, so please ask your child if it was from this week (the first week of 3rd quarter) or from 2nd quarter before they take the time to correct it.  Thank you!

There is no school next Monday for MLK Day!  We will not have classes – see you on Tuesday!  Next week, we will be learning all about him!

Lutheran Schools Week is coming up, and Mrs. Anderson sent home a flier of information on what’s happening this week.  Included in the packet was information on when students should arrive for singing on Sundays + Grandparents Day info/RSVP.  The RSVP needs to come back to us by next Friday.  Here is a very basic run-down of that flier (but please reread your fliers for more specifics!):
•             Sunday, Jan. 24 – K-8 sings at north site (8:30/9:45)
•             Monday, Jan. 25 – Dress as your favorite movie character
•             Tuesday, Jan. 26 – Sports Day + Jump Rope for Heart
•             Wednesday, Jan. 27 – Chapel family picks (see flier for your child’s group choice)
•             Thursday, Jan. 28 – Superhero Day
•             Friday, Jan. 29 – Grandparents/Special Guests Day + Dress Your Best + Talent Show + 12:30 dismissal
•             Sunday, Jan. 31 – K-8 sings at south site (10:00)

Now that we’re in 2016, we start thinking ahead to next school year.  In just a bit, re-enrollment packets will be coming home with your child.  This is always a good opportunity to get word out to friends and families who are looking for a new school home, too.  We would love to expand our Timothy family!

Memory for the next few weeks has changed, as we have a few songs that we are having trouble learning for NLSW.  Please see below:

New Memory Work for the Weeks of January 18th and 25th
We will continue learning the Lord’s Prayer after Lutheran Schools Week.
January 19-  His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.

January 22- When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found; Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne.

January 26- Jesus is the Cornerstone, Came for sinners to atone; though rejected by His own, He became the Cornerstone-Jesus is the Cornerstone.

When I am by sin oppressed, On the stone I am at rest, Where the seeds of truth are sown, He remains the Cornerstone, Jesus is the Cornerstone.

February 2- For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

February 5- Be able to say the entire Lord’s Prayer.

(The rest of the year will remain the same.  Thank you!)

Here is a rundown on our week:
Religion-We learned about Samson, and talked about repentance and forgiveness.

Language Arts- We began cursive this week, by learning the letter “a.”  We will continue with it next week, as it was a challenge for some.  Third graders read a story entitled “Aero and Officer Mike,” and fourth graders read an informative story called, “The Life and Times of the Ant.”

Math-We are doing well on mad minutes!  Keep studying those facts!  J  Third grade learned how to divide and fourth grade learned how to do long multiplication.  Both groups completed simple forms of algebra.  They are doing great!

Science-We met with Mrs. Stack one-on-one, or with our partners and completed our ideas for our projects.  Many of us have already started working on hypotheses.  I would recommend that your child plan to start working on their project very soon and/or finalize plans to meet with a partner, if they have one.  We also completed the first lesson in our Science chapter, and have made vocabulary cards.  These will aide in studying for our test in the upcoming weeks.  I will let you know soon when that will be!

Social Studies-We are up on Current Events with the help of our Scholastic News.  You will see these coming home.  It is a fun way to talk about the news with your child.

Art-We created beautiful water-colored snowflakes!

Writers’ Workshop/Computer-We completed persuasive essays, and will begin a poetry project next week.

Music-We are learning about Back and practicing music for LSW, as well as for Rev. Otte’s installation service.  The children sound beautiful!

P.E.-This week, we learned how to shoot layups, and then we enjoyed the beautiful weather that we had outside on Thursday.
