Dear Parents,
We just finished
our first full week of school and we are doing great! I am so thankful for each
one of these students and how hard they are working each day! They are
already learning so much! Homework is new to some of the children.
Please always check to see if your child has work, as they get used to this
process. Thank you for your help with this! Below is what we have
covered in each of the subject areas.
Religion- We discussed God’s Word, how it is a gift
to us, and how we should treasure it as the true Word of God. We learned
why the Bible is important, and why it is truly wonderful to be a
Christian. We had our first memory Friday, and they all did well!
Here is next week’s work:
September 6-and are justified by his grace as a gift,
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:23-24
September 9- The Old Testament
Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Deuteronomy
Language Arts- This week in Reading, both classes
shared their first reading story from their basals. The third graders
read “A Fine, Fine School,” and fourth graders read the fun story “Because of
Winn Dixie.” In Spelling, the students put their words into abc
order. We took our first spelling test today and the children did
great! Some of the kids even got the challenge word, “consensus”
correct! I reminded them that they will need to be able to spell the word
and put it in a sentence in order to get the extra credit on Fridays! I
can tell they all worked very hard at home preparing! Thank you! We
WILL have spelling words and a reading story next week too.
We received information about book reports this week.
You should have gotten this paperwork at home. (If your child misplaces
it, you can always look online too!) Please encourage your child to read
his or her book report book to stay on target. They can keep this book in
their backpacks, so they can read it in free time at school too! In
English this week, we focused on identifying complete sentences. They
completed their first D.O.L.! (Daily Oral Language) We had our
first visit to the Library on Tuesday, with Amazing Mrs. Stack! We are
going to have so much fun in Library this year… Books that are checked out are
due the following Tuesday. If your child needs his or her book for
another week, they just need to re-check it out. Thank you!
Math- Third graders worked on rounding numbers
to the 10 and 100, as well as solving word problems. We will review and
test over Chapter 1 next week. J
With Mrs. Barnett, fourth graders worked with putting hundred thousand numbers
into word form, standard form, and expanded form. They also worked with
ordering numbers. They will also test over Chapter 1 next week!
Social Studies- We started off the week with Current
Events, and read about several news headlines in our Scholastic News—including
meeting the candidates in the upcoming elections, as well as about the
disappearing bison, and some other neat stories.
In our books, we reviewed grid maps, and began chapter 1. We have learned
about communities, and discussed the words construction and citizen
as well.
Homeschoolers joined us this week! :) It was great to
get to know Morgan (3rd), Wesley (3rd), and Levi (4th)!
P.E.- This week in P.E., we learned how to do our
stretches and paced ourselves as we ran. We also practiced volleyball
skills! We learned how to correctly pass, set, and move. Next week,
we will learn setting, serving, and try some scrimmages.
Music- With Mrs. Pennington, we learned the different
types of notes, as well as the song “Do, Re, Me.” We learned the solfege
and reviewed how to read music. For some of us, this is brand new.
We are going to learn so much from her this year from her!
Writers’ Workshop- We learned the steps, which
are: Planning, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing. We
began writing stories in our awesome notebooks! A lot of children asked
if they can take their notebooks home to continue their stories, and I of
course would love that! Please just make sure it comes back to school to
work on too! We will work hard next week… Some weeks, the children will
work on their own stories, and sometimes they will work on assigned
papers. We will write a biographical sketch, a personal essay, a
persuasive essay, a research report, and several types of poetry this
year.
Computer-Mrs. Stack will be working with the children
during computer lab time. This goes hand-in-hand with Writers’
Workshop. During this time, they will learn such things as keyboarding
skills, computer etiquette, playing games, and how to publish their written
work using Google Docs. I have a school account set up for them, which
they will have a folder to store their documents. Your child will be able
to access this from home too, with your permission, to work on these
assignments at home too.
Art- This week, we worked on contour drawing, and
practiced drawing a continues shape without picking up our pencils. This
was fun! We they created people contours. We will complete this
project next week…These will be on display soon!
We also had our first Spanish class this week! Mrs.
Carrasco, our Spanish teacher, will be sending home notes about Spanish once a
month. I will always let your child know in their assignment books if he
or she has a Spanish assignment as well.
