Newsletter 9/9/16

Hello, 3rd/4th grade families!  I hope you have had a great week!

Points of Interest:
*We have our first school wide mission project!  River Roads Lutheran School has been “Sharing the Caring Christ” for 146 years in St. Louis. Unfortunately, due to the economic challenges and lack of funding, River Roads is faced with the possibility of closing their doors. Timothy Lutheran School has chosen to make this our first Mission Project of the year. We are determined to raise a minimum of $500 by September 28, to offset some of their expenses. The collection can is located on the trophy case outside of the office. We hope and pray that your family is moved by the Spirit to help them, so they can continue to develop young Christian leaders of today and tomorrow! Thanks in advance for your generosity.

*Thank you SO MUCH for your immense patience and flexibility this week as our parking lot was repaved.  Doesn’t it look fantastic now?  We are happy that we had good weather and attentive students for this unique way to start the week.

*When 5/6 Grade heads to meet with their Early Childhood Center pen pals throughout the year, they’ll be spending some time doing mission projects with their younger friends.  In September, they are collecting books (new or gently used) for when our church congregation serves dinner at the Welcome Inn.  If you have any children’s or teen books at your home that you no longer use and would like to donate, we’d love them!  We’re hoping we’ll be able to give these less fortunate kids a TON of really great books!  Thank you in advance for your generosity!!

*Fall Fun Festival is coming, Sept. 16-18.  Parade on Sat. beginning at 10a.m.  Timothy will have a float and we will be letting you know where to come to line-up when the city gives us our line-up number.
Also with the Festival, Timothy will be having a fundraiser which involves parking cars at Charlie’s Auto just north from the Steakburger Stand.  Here is a link to the sign-up genius for you to sign-up and help with this:

*We are looking for someone to be our coordinator for our yearly Trivia Night event, which will be held in April.  If you would like more information contact Mr. Kuerschner at school.

*Our Young Rembrandts program, for grades K-6, starts Monday, Sept. 19.  Please register online at www.youngrembrandts.com/KCMO

We have been busy, busy around here!

*We lead Chapel next week, on Wednesday, September 14th.  If you are able, please stay and help us worship!

Language Arts- The third graders read “The Trial of Cardigan Jones,” and learned some new words that have to do with a courtroom….Fourth graders read the historical story called “My Brother Martin,” written by Martin Luther King Jr.’s sister.  It was a wonderful story, and let to some awesome discussions!  Please continue to practice your child’s vocabulary words each week.  These are always located at the beginning of the story.  They will be tested on these each Friday.  Students completed their first independent DOL this week.  It is fun for me to see the confidence in the 4th graders, as they get used to using these editing skills!  3rd graders are coming right along too!

Math- Third graders finished up their review today over Chapter 1, and we will test on Monday.  They have learned to order numbers, round them, but them in different types of forms, and work out word problems involving them.  Fourth graders took their Chapter 1 test today.  They too, have been working with organizing numbers up to the millions place.  Both grade levels are doing a great job!  We are also focusing on number sense.  Please continue to practice math facts (addition and multiplication) at home with your child through flash cards and computer games.  Thank you!

Social Studies- We began our School of Economics studies this week!  In a nutshell, we will be working with money and studying economics in the classroom and these skills will be put to work in the simulated city at the School of Economics.  The students will be pretending that they are immigrants who have come to America to begin a new life, and start a business of their own.  Each child will have a job, earn money, produce goods and services, meet new friends, and learn a lot!  Today, we had job interviews, and learned a lot about Ellis Island.  It is all so exciting!

On Monday, we will place special focus on discussions about September 11th, 2001.

P.E.- This week in P.E., practiced volleyball serving—and are really getting the hang of it!

Music- With Mrs. Pennington, we are learning the names of notes and what they look like, how to direct, and find the “beat,” as well as learning new songs to sing.

Writers’ Workshop- We are writing like crazy!  We will begin publishing next week on Google Docs.  Your child has learned how to get into Google Drive and save a document into his or her folder.  We will begin “I Poems” next week as well.

Computers- Grade 3:  Practiced addition and subtraction facts with GregTangMath site, and explored the BrainGames link.  Grade 4:  Practiced addition and multiplication facts with GregTangMath site, and explored BrainGames link.  They are learning so much!

Art- We completed our Contour People and these will be up in the hallway for you to view!  Next week, we will create color wheels with the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.  We will learn how to mix colors using only primary colors.  We will put these newfound “mixing” skills to use, and create beautiful paintings of hot air balloons.
