Newsletter 9-30-16

Hello, Parents!  Can you believe it is the end of September already?!  Where is the time flying?  Goodness!

Here is what we have been up to:

Religion- This week we discussed how the Law shows us our sin, like a mirror.  The Gospel shows us the Good News that is only found in Jesus!  The two go hand-in hand, and thank Jesus for this one:  —We don’t just have the Law!  On this note, we have been learning the commandments in Chapel, and the 2nd graders shared their skit about 4th commandment this week:  Honor your father and mother.  We also discussed this week how we, as Christians, can show Jesus in what we say, think, and do.
Next week’s memory:
October 4-
Hebrews
James
1 & 2 Peter
1 , 2, & 3 John
Jude
Revelation

October 7-Recite all of the New Testament Books

Language Arts- The third graders read “Roberto Clemente, Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates,” which was a wonderful biography, and really sparked some great baseball conversations! The fourth graders read “Stormalong,” a tall tale about a seaman.  We had a lot of laughs with this one!  Fourth graders shared book reports over a Newbery winner today.  They did a great job!  They will get their information about the October book report on Monday.  Third graders have until the end of the quarter.

Fourth graders received their dictionaries this morning from the Optimist Club of Blue Springs.  This is something they look forward to every year, as they see their 4th grade friends receive them when they are 3rd graders.  All 4th graders in the area receive one.  Home school friends will have one waiting on their desks when they arrive on Tuesday!  We are so thankful!

Next week, we will learn about friendly letters and begin writing to our new pen pals:  The 4 year olds in Ms. Julie’s preschool class!

Math- Third graders have been working with longer addition this week, concerning 3 and 4 digit numbers.  They also worked with rounding and problem solving.  Fourth graders worked with rounding numbers too, as well as regrouping.  Today, they have been learning some early algebra, by covering expressions and variables.  They are all catching on so quickly!

Social Studies- We talked about communities this week, covering the amazing community of San Antonio, Texas.

P.E.- This week in P.E. we had relays using scooters and different exercising skills.

Art- We created woven paper pumpkins, that are decorating our hallway.  Our hot air balloons are now “floating” at the Mid-Continent Public Library-the south branch.  Go and check them out!

Music- We practiced our song for the Reformation service on October 30th.  We also reviewed beat and rhythm with our own Rhythm Band!

Writers’ Workshop- We have begun our personal narrative, first with a graphic organizer, and then with the drafting step.  The kids are so excited to share about their real experiences.  We will share these in Readers’ Theatre in a couple of weeks, as we finish them up!

Computer Lab-we published our writings and learned how to use “Story Scrambler.”

*We go to School of Economics next Friday, and we are READY!  We have worked so hard here in the classroom.  Thank you to all of the parents that have signed up to help that day… It will be a lot of work, but loads of fun!  Good news:  We have had SO many volunteers at our volleyball games, that the cost for each student went from $14 to $7!  Whoopee!  Please send in $7 for this trip by next Friday.  I know some of you have already sent in the full $14, so we’ll send home a refund of $7 with your child next week.  Thank you so much for your support.
