Newsletter

Hello, Parents!  It has been another fun, but busy week!
As I mentioned last week, there are many important events coming up!

*Progress reports went home on Wednesday. Please check your child’s backpack.  Thank you!
*The Scholastic Book Fair begins today.  Come and check it out!
*Our students are singing in church!  Grades K-3 sing on this Sunday, Jan. 22, at our north site (8:30/9:45).  Please be there by 8:15 in the music room.   Grades 4-8 sing on Jan. 29, at our south site (10:00).  Please be there by 9:45, in the gym.
*Lutheran Schools Week is next week.  There are special events and special dress days all week long!  Each day, at different times, we will meet as a whole school, with our Chapel Families, and do a fun activity.  Friday the 27th, our last school day of LSW, is Grandparent’s Day!  Students can bring special guests for fun activities, our talent show, and more.  We will dismiss at 12:30 this day.  Here are some more specific details:
•             Monday special dress: Fan Favorite (dress as your favorite anything)
•             Tuesday special dress: Favorite Book Character – students bring your favorite book too.  We will share these in the afternoon with Chapel Families.
•             Wednesday special dress: Chapel Family Choice (see flier we sent home)
•             Thursday special dress: Class Color Day (3/4 grades are RED!)
•             Friday special dress: Dress Your Best

*Mrs. Carrasco’s birthday is January 26th—We will be making her a special card in class.  J
*Wednesday, February 1st, is Morning with Mom!  Similar to our Donuts with Dad day, students can bring a special guest, eat breakfast at school, and do a fun activity with mom (or someone else near and dear to your child).  Doors open at 7:45.
*Enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year will be starting in February!  You will receive your enrollment information the first week of February.  If you know of any friends looking for a new school home, be sure to mention us!
*Achievement tests are coming up!  These will be February 21st-24th.  The testing will be in the mornings from 8:30-12:00 every day.  The home school students are invited to do this as well.  If you are interested, please let me know and Mr. K will order your supplies.  Thank you!

Here is what we have been up to in our classroom:
Religion:
We have been discussing all of the names of Jesus, and discussed how we view Him.  We learned the words:  incarnation and annunciation.  We discussed how He took our place, and fought against sin, death, and the power of the devil for us!  This week in Chapel, we were able to witness the baptism of our first grade friend, Vera.  We praise God that she has been washed by the waters of Holy Baptism!  How exciting!
Memory for next week:
January 24- Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
January 31- And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Language Arts/Social Studies:
We read and learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. all week long.   We read the story, “Happy Birthday, Dr. King,” and learned about his life, as well as what he stood for and taught in his many speeches and life lessons.  He was such an amazing man.  We had so many great discussions as a class.  I hope some of these came home, and you were able to have some meaningful talks too!  This week, we also learned how to use pronouns to replace nouns, and the differences between synonyms and antonyms.  We WILL have spelling words and a reading selection next week.  We will have our tests on Thursday, instead of Friday.  We have talked so much about the office of the president during our Washington, D.C. unit, that we were able to take some time today to watch the inauguration.  It was very neat that the kids were able to witness this part of history!

Math:
Third graders this week worked with solving division word problems, and breaking the information apart so it is more easily understood.  We reviewed today and will test over division on Monday.  Please keep working on memorizing those facts!  Fourth grade is working with long division, checking your answers, and working with word problems.  They too, reviewed today and will test next week.

During Art, we created portraits of MLK after reading a book about him. We used pencil, sharpie, and tempera paint.  These kids are SO talented!

For Writers’ Workshop, we each wrote “I Have A Dream” speeches.  These will be in the hallway to view for Grandparents’ Day…along with our amazing MLK portraits!  We also worked on our research papers, which are coming right along!

In P.E. this week, we have begun playing parachute games—washing machine, popcorn, switch-places—we are having a lot of fun!

In Music, we are continuing to learn our songs for National Lutheran Schools Week, and have reviewed notes.
