Hello, Parents! My
prayer is that you have a warm and safe weekend!
Please note:
*Today is the end of the 2nd Quarter! Report cards will come home with your child
next Wednesday, January 18.
*We will not have school on Monday, Jan. 16, in honor of
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We will still have normal spelling and
reading in spite of the four-day-week.
*On Wednesday, we had an awesome presentation from Jackson
County Soil and Water Conservation District, where we learned all about the
attributes of soil and its importance to us.
We walked around and went to stations, where we learned new things at
each one. Soil is pretty amazing. Make sure you ask your child what he or she
learned!
*If your child is interested in doing something at our
Talent Show on Friday, January 27th (part of Lutheran Schools Week + Grandparents
Day), try-outs are next Wednesday, January 18th after school in the music room. Students need to fill out and return the form
to me! If your child does not want to
perform in the talent show, they can show off artwork, crafts or written work
on the 27th too! You can turn
these items into me too. There is no
need to come to tryouts.
*The Scholastic Book Fair begins next Friday. Your child received a handout today that
lists some very cool books!
*Our students are singing in church later this month! Grades K-3 sing on Jan. 22, at our north site
(8:30/9:45); Grades 4-8 sing on Jan. 29, at our south site (10:00).
*Lutheran Schools Week is the last full week of
January. There will be special events
and special dress days all week long!
Friday the 27th, our last school day of LSW, is Grandparent’s Day! Students can bring special guests for fun
activities, our talent show, and more.
We will dismiss at 12:30 this day.
Here are some more specific details:

• Tuesday

• Wednesday
special dress: Chapel Family Choice (see flier we sent home yesterday)
• Thursday

*Wednesday, February 1st, is Morning with
Mom! Similar to our Donuts with Dad day,
students can bring a special guest, eat breakfast at school, and do a fun activity
with mom (or someone else near and dear to your child). Doors open at 7:45.
*Enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year will be starting
in February! You will receive your
enrollment information the first week of February. If you know of any friends looking for a new
school home, be sure to mention us!
Here is what we have been up to in the classroom:
Religion-We have been discussing and learning about how
Jesus is true God and true man. We have
reviewed the Bible stories of Jesus calming the storm, and turning water into
wine.
Memory for next week:
January 17- We will have a short matching test over the
commandments. Please remind your child to
practice which commandment goes with which number.
January 20-The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven.
Language Arts- Third graders read over the story ‘The
Extra-Good Sunday,” which is about our friend Ramona Quimby. This ties right in with what I am reading
aloud to the kids from our author, Beverly Cleary. (Ramona and Her Father). Fourth grade read a story called “Ecology for
Kids.” This had many of the same facts that
we are learning about in Science!
Awesome! Next week, we will be
learning all about Martin Luther King, Jr.
Both grades will a have the same reading selection, and the same
spelling words.
Spelling words for next week:
peaceful
protest
boycott
civil rights
dream
equality
freedom
movement
treatment
kindness
Challenge Word: stupendous
Math-Third grade continues to work on division, and
they are doing well! Mad minutes are
coming right along! They have also
learned how to find numbers to balance both sides of an equation. Fourth grade is working with long division
and using multiplication to check the answers.
Some are struggling with this, but they are getting it! Please keep working with your child on multiplication
facts. These will help!
Science-We began our Science unit over Living Things
this week! We have begun to talk about plants
and their parts, and what it means to be a scientist! We will begin working on science projects
soon! Details about that will be coming
home shortly…
Writing-We began research projects. Each student has chosen an animal that
interests him or her and we checked out books from the library and found
internet sites to give us information. We have begun taking notes, and will
start to develop paragraphs next week.
Art-We learned how to cut out snowflakes and have
made Snowflake Snowmen. Please check
them out in the hall!
P.E.-We finished up our basketball unit and will
begin working with a parachute next week!
Yay!
Music-Third grade has been identifying notes and
fourth grade is learning how to play recorders!
Both groups are practicing a song for National Lutheran Schools Week. We will be practicing these songs during
devotions too.
