Hello! We have had a great second week of school! We have been super-busy as we have transitioned into all the core classes, as well as welcoming our home-school friends this week!
Here are a few important announcements:
*Yearbooks from last year are in! We will be signing them after Chapel next week. We have extras, so if you did not get one and would like to still buy one, there are several extras in the office for $13. Each child will have something to sign because we will have fun “autograph” pages that they can take around to sign, if they did not get a yearbook. Thank you.
*We have a new service project! An email was sent home yesterday and information about it will be coming home today as well. We are adopting a sister Lutheran School, Lutheran South Academy (LSA), in Houston, Texas. LSA has over 850 students, Pre-K through 12th grade. Their campus was completely flooded by Hurricane Harvey. All funds collected will go towards the Lutheran South Academy Hurricane Relief Fund (see link below). We will have chapel offerings and a Walk-A-Thon.
Information regarding the Walk-A-Thon was shared in chapel yesterday, and forms are coming home. All families are encouraged to participate. Thank you for any help you can give!
*Please always check with your child to see if he or she has homework. Almost always, homework is just work that was not finished in class. Thank you for your help with this!
*As a reminder, Friday Folders will come home this afternoon filled with graded work. Please empty these and return the folder on Monday. Anything with a letter grade can be “redone” for half credit per answer, and turned back in on Tuesday. So far, everybody is doing very well and working very hard!
*Our website is an excellent place to find information! Please look there to see this newsletter, as well as to find spelling words, memory work, athletic information, and other valuable information. Once on our school website, you can click on the link for our classroom blog. Thank you! http://www.timothylutheranschool.com/
*There has been one change to the information about field trips that I sent home at before-school visits. The field trip to School of Economics has changed from October 18th to December 13th. Thank you!
Here is what we have been up to this week:
Religion- We learned about the Tower of Babel and God’s mission for each of us--to spread the Good News of His saving grace and love! We talked about the many blessings God has given us today!
Language Arts- We read our first story from our reading basals, one of the chapters from “Because of Winn Dixie.” We loved this story! This week we analyzed the characters, wrote a summary of the story, and studied the new vocabulary words. We also talked about sentence structure and learned how to divide sentences into subjects and predicates.
Spelling packets, containing activities to do with spelling words each week, will be handed out on Mondays (or the first day of the week). Students will have some class time to work on these daily, and they are due on Fridays. Students can take them home to work on them, but please make sure that they come back to school everyday, because I do carve out class time for work. Thank you!
Next week, we will begin Literature Circles! As a class, we are going to read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. There will not be a reading test on this until September 15th. However, there will be a spelling test both Fridays, (8th and 15th) over common words found in the story. We are excited! The students also received information about their first book reports. They have each picked out a Newbery Award winning book to read, and understand their project, to make a new book cover. These are due October 2nd. This information should be in their homework folders.
Math- This week, we worked with ordering numbers, and using place value to round. Next week, we will finish up this chapter, and will begin reviewing adding and subtracting whole numbers. Please continue to work on your child’s math facts at home! Flash cards are the best!
Social Studies- We are learning so much about our amazing state! After studying and analyzing Missouri’s seal and flag, the students each designed a classroom flag with a seal. We voted on our favorite, and Kamryn won! She will create her flag to be laminated and hung in the classroom! Yay! We have finished up our first chapter, and completed the vocabulary review today. A review for your child to study at home is coming home today too. We will also play a fun Jeopardy game in class to help us with all that vocabulary. Our test over Chapter 1 will be next Friday, September 8th.
The students had their first homework assignment given to them on Tuesday--and it’s a fun one! Your child is to interview a Missourian, preferably someone older than themselves. They have the questionnaire with all the topics, and have practiced a bit at school. They can interview you, a grandparent, a neighbor, or a friend, over the phone or in person...just someone who has resided or still resides in Missouri. :) We will learn so much from these interviews--I am excited! They are due on Tuesday, September 5th.
SPECIAL CLASSES
Art- We made monkeys to hang out around here! Right now, they are hanging in the hallway for all to see! Come to the “jungle” to check them out!
Music and Spanish-We had our first classes with Ms. Judy MacLean and Mrs. Triana Carrasco this week! Both classes went very well. Fourth grade is going to learn so very much this year from these amazing teachers!
Writing-We learned the steps to Writers’ Workshop. We also read the book The Best Part of Me, and began writing about the best parts of ourselves, remembering that we are God’s uniquely beautiful creations!
P.E.-We have P.E. with the 3rd graders! This week we learned the correct way to stretch, run our ;last and then we participated in fun relays where we uses different body skills--skipping, jumping, hopping, gliding, the crab walk, etc. It was fun!
This was such a fun week! As always, thank you for your prayers and guidance as we travel through this school year together. Have a wonderful and safe, LONG weekend!
God’s Blessings!
