It's been a great week!

Hello!  We have had a great second week of school!  We have been super-busy as we have transitioned into all the core classes, as well as beginning Specials!
(Mackenzie joined us this week!  Yay!)

*As a reminder, Friday Folders will come home this afternoon filled with graded work.  Please empty these and return the folder on Tuesday (usually Mondays!).  Anything with a letter grade can be “redone” for half credit per answer, and turned back in when they return to school the next week.  So far, everybody is doing very well and working very hard!

*We earned our first STAR party for awesome behavior!  They kiddos’ voted to have an electronic party next Friday afternoon (9/6).  Please allow your child to bring an electronic game to school and snack to share if he or she wants to!  I will also get out all of our game boards.  Please congratulate your kiddo on a “job well done!”

*If you have not already sent in your signed paper that you read the Parent Handbook, please do so.  (This is the last page of the handbook.)  Thank you!

Here is what we have been up to this week:

Religion- We learned about the Tower of Babel and God’s mission for each of us--to spread the Good News of His saving grace and love!  We talked about the many blessings God has given us today!

Memory for Next Week:
9/3-May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our LORD Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
~ 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

9/6- The Old Testament
Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Deuteronomy

Language Arts- We read our first story from our reading basals!  Third graders read “A Fine, Fine School” and fourth graders read one of the chapters from “Because of Winn Dixie.”  They loved these stories!  This week we analyzed the characters, wrote summaries of the stories, and studied the new vocabulary words.  We took our first reading and spelling tests today and the students did very well!   We also reviewed the cursive letters q, o, c, i, u, and e.

The students also received information about their first book reports.  They have each picked out a Mystery (3rd) or a Newbery Award winning (4th) book to read, and understand their projects.  This information should be in their homework folders.

Spelling Words for the Week of September 6th:
3rd Grade Story: “The Trial of Cardigan Jones”
spoke, mile, save, excuse, cone, invite, cube, price, erase, ripe, broke, flame, life, rule, surprise, decide
Challenge Word: omniscient

Math- This week, we all worked with the vocabulary words digit, period, and place value.  We worked with putting numbers in standard, word, and expanded forms.  We also read numbers up through the millions!  Next week, we will we work with ordering numbers, and using place value to round.  Please continue to work on your child’s math facts at home!  Flash cards are the best!

Social Studies- We completed our first Scholastic News this week.  This is a great way to talk about current events.  We also began learning about Missouri History this week!  We are proud Missourians in here!  ;)

SPECIAL CLASSES
Art- We created “Who Am I?” pictures.  These are self-portraits made with construction paper and other media, and wrote riddles for the rest of the school to solve.  Please come by our hallway to see if you can pick out each child in our class.  Fun!
Music-We had our first classes with Ms. Judy MacLean.  3rd/4th grade is going to learn so very much this year from this amazing teacher!
Spanish-The students had their first class ever with Mrs. Kathy Romo.  They had their first assignment, and were so excited coming from class!
Writing-We shared our Summer Vacation stories in Readers' Theatre.  We also learned the steps to Writers’ Workshop, and began our first stories.
P.E.-This week we learned the correct way to stretch, run our laps, and then reviewed some volleyball skills, by doing some passing drills.

This was such a fun week!  As always, thank you for your prayers and guidance as we travel through this school year together.  Have a wonderful and safe, LONG Labor Day weekend!

God’s Blessings!
Kim
