Happy Winter!

Hi!  I missed these kiddos SO much over Christmas break!  I am SO happy we are together as a family again!  I hope you had a blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year!  We are “back into the swing of things” here at school, so hang on tight!  ;)

*Today is the END OF 3RD QUARTER and a 1:00 Dismissal.  Report cards will come home on January 16th.

**ALL of our basketball games are CANCELLED for this weekend (tonight and tomorrow) because of impending inclement weather!  Thank you!

*TLS TALENT SHOW tryouts are January 15th after school in the music room.

*LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL is having a cheer camp on January 18th from 9-noon.

*Our SNOW MAKE-UP DAY  is January 20th (MLK Day).

*Lutheran Schools Week is coming up!  (January 26-31)  Details about each day are listed in the Dates To Remember below.  Thank you!

Here is what we have been up to this week:
Religion- This week, we learned all about Solomon and the temple he built for the Lord.  We discussed his gift of wisdom, details of the Ark of the Covenant, and made a floor plan of his amazing temple.

Memory for next week-
1/14- We will have a short matching test over the commandments.
1/17-The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Language Arts- This week, we read some powerful stories!  Third graders read the story, “The Science Fair,” which led to some great discussions about science projects and being confident!  Fourth graders read the true story about Cesar Chavez entitled, “Harvesting Hope.”  We discussed the inequality and discrimination that took place, and how he overcame his insecurities to stand up for what he thought was right and to make some lasting changes.  These discussions have gotten us ready for our class study of Martin Luther King Jr. next week!  We are excited to learn all about him!  In Language Arts this week we also learned all about onomatopoeias and idioms, and shared third grade book reports!

Sharing our stories from a silly writing prompt...

Spelling Words for Friday, January 17th: (Whole Class)
peaceful, protest, boycott, civil rights, dream, equality, freedom, movement, treatment, kindness, Challenge Word: discrimination

Math- Third graders began multiplying and dividing by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s this week.  Fourth grade tested over Chapter 5, (long multiplication), and began Chapter 6, which introduces long division!  Knowing those facts is helping tremendously!  We also learned how to lay the fun math game Count 10, where we use all the skills—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division!

Social Studies- In our Scholastic News (current events), we read about the city of Montgomery, Alabama, and their first African American mayor in the city’s history.  We also read and learned about the other historic events that took place in that city—Rosa Park and MLK’s involvement in the bus boycotts.

Art: We learned all about “Snowflake Bentley” and his amazing life.  We studied snowflakes and their intricate patterns.  We then cut out snowflakes and with watercolor, oil pastels, and construction paper, made snowflake snowmen.
Writing: We wrote short stories over a picture prompt and then shared these in Readers’ Theatre.  This was fun as we shared the adventures of a raccoon and kitten!
P.E.: Basketball Skills: shooting and free throws!
This is how we lined up to run during PE on Tuesday... Notice anything?!

Music: We are practicing our songs for National Lutheran Schools Week.
