Happy 2021!

It's Friday, it's Friday, it's Friday!  ;)

Hi! I hope you all had a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year! Happy 2021!  It was so great to see all of the kiddos again…I missed them so much!

 Important information:

*Today is the last day of 2nd quarter!  Report Cards will come home on January 15th.

*Lutheran Schools Week will be celebrated January 24th-January 31st.  A list of the activities will be coming home next week!

*If you have not done so already, and your child is interested in doing the Talent Show, which will be for students only on January 29th, please let me know!  We have scheduled the try-outs to be on Wednesday, January 20th, from 3:45-4:30.  I will send a note out to interested folks next week.  Thanks!

Here is what we have been up to in the classroom:

Religion- This week in Religion, we discussed confession, absolution, forgiveness, and sins.  We talked about the guilt that happens when we sin and don’t confess our sins.  We discussed the life of David, and although he was one of the heroes of the Bible, he was also a poor, miserable sinner, just like us, who needed God’s grace and forgiveness.

 Memory for next week:

1/12- We will have a short matching test over the commandments.  Please review them.

1/15-The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Language Arts- This week, 3rd graders read the story “Yonder Mountain: A Cherokee Legend.”  This was a great folktale that led to a discussion about putting others’ needs before our own.  4th graders read a nonfiction piece entitled, “Antarctic Journal.”  We learned a lot about this amazing continent!  We worked with contractions this week and wrote letters and cards to a 90 year-old Timothy member, Verna, to surprise her for her birthday!

Spelling words for next Friday, January 15th:  (both 3rd and 4th grades--from “My Brother Martin”)

west, steep, member, gleam, fresh, freedom, speed, steam, beast, believe, speck, kept, cheap, pretend, greed, shelf, least, eager, reason, chief, echo, menu, *segregation

Math- 3rd graders have been working with simple multiplication and division.  They have learned the terms dividend, divisor, and quotient.  4th graders are working with estimating products and multiplying by zeroes.

Science- We worked with classifying animals by their structures.  We have had fun learning about a lot of interesting vertebrates and invertebrates! We have finished up our unit and will test over this next Friday.  I have attached the study guide.  Science Chapter 1 Study Guide

This is just an idea of the terms each student should know for the exam, not an assignment.  We will play Science Jeopardy on Wednesday to get ready too!  Here is the link if you want to play at home to help study:  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1I7BuFUj20UjzVuC6wXYh5bJR1ZW6OI85B-JMyQOuHIg/edit?usp=sharing

Social Studies- This week in Scholastic News, we learned about immigration.  It was very educational to read several stories about immigrants—One written by a descendant of an immigrant that came to Ellis Island.  The other was written by a man that was denied immigration from Angel Island and then later became a proud U.S. citizen.  We had many discussions about who America is and how we came to be.  It was beautiful to the kids talk about their faith and how they are so proud to be able to worship as they choose.  We are proud to be Americans!

 SPECIAL CLASSES

Art- We created snowflake snowmen this week.  We will finish them up next week and begin on our auction project.

Writing- We finished up our persuasive essays and our publishing them in the Computer Lab.

Music- The kids are working on songs for National Lutheran Schools Week.

P.E. – We are still working on basketball skills.  This week, we practiced making layups!

Spanish- The kids have learned words and phrases that pertain to the new year!

Our 3rd graders shared their book report projects today:  Historical Fiction...

May God bless your weekend,
Kim Brunkhorst
