May God Bless You and Keep You...

Dear 4th Grade Parents,

We have had a great week!  One of my highlights that we do every day, is that we have devotions every morning, followed by highs and lows, which is always so wonderful, as I get an insight into the children’s’ lives that I normally would not get the chance to see.  It is so wonderful… We always then pray for one another and give each other a blessing.

Today's Devotion:

*As a reminder, Homework Folders will come home this afternoon filled with graded work.  Please empty these and return the folder on Mondays.  Anything with a letter grade can be “redone” for half credit per answer, and turned back in when they return to school the next week.

*THE WALK-A-THON IS COMING!  Timothy’s 5th annual Walk-a-Thon is Friday, September 24th.  Like last year, this year will look a bit different than it has in the past, but our goals are the same—to help our school grow and prosper!  This year, our goal will be to ensure that our Music Room has a ClearTouch board and other supplies, as well as many other school improvements.   Get ready!  Pledge forms are coming home today, and I have attached one here.  Pledges can even made online!   Parents are also needed to assist during the Walk-a-Thon.  We are going to spread the Walk-A-Thon out through the entire day, as to socially distance each class.  The routes will be shorter, as there will be two classes walking on two different parts of the parking lot at the same time.  We will need just two parents per class to stand along the route or to count laps.   PK though second grade classes will be walking on the west parking lot and third grade through eighth grade classes will be walking on the south parking lot.

We will also need snacks for the day, so if you would rather donate in that fashion, please do so here:

*The Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest Parade is also coming up! On Saturday morning, September 18th, Timothy Lutheran will have a float in the line-up, but we are not quite sure where that will be yet.  Once we know, we will tell you what time and where to meet!  The parade begins at 10:00.  Please wear Timothy shirts or school colors – navy and red. Miss Rathke has been practicing songs with the kiddos that they will sing while they are walking or riding, so we hope you can make it!

*School Picture Day is next Friday, September 17! You can order online at www.inter-state.com/order. Use the order code: 62862CB . Individual photos of home school students b egin at 8:30 am; followed by the all-school and class group photos. Dress your best and bring your smiles!

Here is what we have been up to this week:

Religion- This week, we created A Book of Blessings.  We discussed how God created this beautiful world and all that is in it for US!  We thanked God for each letter of the alphabet, and the blessings that go along with it!  Today, we also discussed the tragedies of September 11th, 2001.  We watched a short video about this fateful day, and also read several books and had a very candid discussion.  We made a beautiful book about our thoughts…This led to a great discussion about God and His love for us.  We shared the Bible verse Romans 8: 38-39….and discussed how God will never, ever leave us.  We used this verse to illustrate our thoughts of 9/11.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.~ Romans 8: 38-39

Leviticus

9/17-

Joshua

Ruth

1 & 2 Samuel

1 & 2 Kings

1 & 2 Chronicles

Language Arts- We read a story called How Tia Lola Came to Stay.  This story actually led us into a great discussion about how we should be kind to others, and really be in tune to their feelings.  We talked about verbal and non-verbal cues.  This is a very intuitive class!  Please continue to urge your child to read those book report books!  Thanks!  We also discussed cause and effect, and found examples of this in our story.  As a whole class, we also reviewed how to write complete sentences, making sure it had a noun, verb, and was a complete thought.  We talked about how to write sentences “4th grade style,” with more detail!   We have been working on DOL (Daily Oral Language) where we use editing marks to correct sentences that are just a mess!  ;)  We have done one together and one our own.  You will see this independent one come home this week.  Each child graded his or her own as we corrected them as a class.  They will get better and better at this skill!

Spelling Words for the Week of September 17th:

Story: "Stormalong"

wait, weight, heard, herd, days, daze, heel, heal, peak, peek, sent, cent, scent, feet, feat, vain, vane, vein, miner, minor, principal, principle

Challenge Word: malicious

Math- This week, we reviewed Chapter 1, tested over it, and then began Chapter 2, which is all about addition properties, subtraction rules, and patterns with both.  We will “zoom” through this review chapter so we can focus on longer multiplication.  Please keep working on rote multiplication at home!  Flash cards are always helpful, and here are some great websites:  www.multiplication.com and www.timestables.com/games.  We have been taking a new form of “mad minutes” in our classroom, that is really helping the kiddos memorize their facts, and I am SO excited!  For five days, the kids madly finish their facts over one skill (like multiplying by 2’s or 3’s), and each day they see improvements on their time.  Within 100 days (hopefully!) these facts should be easier and memorized.  I will keep you posted!

Social Studies- This week, we learned some current events from our Scholastic News.  We discussed September 11th, and other important topics!  We began a nonfiction chapter book entitled, Towers Falling.  In Social Studies, we learned about the Northeast Region of the United States and completed some map skill work.  I am learning that so many of these kiddos love working with maps!

 SPECIAL CLASSES

Art- We reviewed most of our lowercase cursive letters and then created amazing Cursive Creatures with our cursive names!  These are fantastic and are lurking around in our classroom!  ;)  Please make sure you check out their pictures on our classroom blog page.

Music- This week, the students have been learning about rhythms and beats.  They also have been learning some patriotic songs.  They sound beautiful!

Writing- This week, we wrote BioPoems and published them.  We are so excited to share these with you!

Computer Lab-We played multiplication games and published letters to Mrs. Brunkhorst.  :)

P.E. This week we worked on volleyball skills—passing and serving.  We will put these skills together next week for some fun drills and game situations!

Have a blessed weekend!

God's Blessings,

Kim
