Dear 4th Grade Parents,
*Yesterday was our Veterans Day program and it was SO
beautiful! We had quite a turnout! The children sang several amazing songs about
being Americans, my favorite being a song entitled, “If My People,” based on 2 Chronicles 7:14. It was a beautiful morning! Getting able to share that experience with my
dad and husband was very special to me too.
THANK YOU, Veterans, for giving of yourselves for the rest of us. We closed with this prayer, which is very
poignant:
Dear Lord, we honor our veterans in your name. We thank
you – as we thank them – for their sacrifice. We ask you to return to them the
favor of your blessing, a gift we on our own could never offer. We ask that you
would give our veterans a peace beyond the peace they fought to secure, a peace
in their own hearts, wrapped in the joy of a life touched by your strong hand.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
*Remember – NO SCHOOL the week of Thanksgiving, November 22 - 26. The teachers have a conference out of town the first 2 days of the week. The rest of the week is Thanksgiving break. There will be NO CHILDCARE.
*Several of you have asked me about wish-lists in the
classroom and for athletics. I have put
together two Amazon lists. One thing the
4th grade kiddos would love, is to have recess equipment that we
will take out with our class only. I
told them I would help them build these materials and then pass it on with them
as they go on to 5th grade.
:)
Here are the lists:

THANK YOU!
Religion-
This week, we focused on Gideon and Samson, and how they
were judges for the people of Israel.
Both men, were sinners, yet led by example. We studied the stories of their faith.
Memory for Next Week:
11/16-but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and
give thanks.
11/19-THE THIRD COMMANDMENT
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? We should fear and love
God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and
gladly hear and learn it.
Language Arts-
We read the chapter book, Molly’s Pilgrim, by Barbara
Cohen. This is a story about an
immigrant from Russia, who learns all about the first Thanksgiving and what it
means to be an American. We had a lot of
great discussions about our country, and what a blessing it is to be citizens
of the United States. We worked with
compare/contrast, predicting, and timelines.
We also read the stories by Patricia Polacco, entitled Pink and Say
and Just in Time, Abraham Lincoln.
Next week, we will learn all about the first Thanksgiving!
Spelling Words for Friday, November 19th:
Plymouth, Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, compact, Mayflower,
pumpkin, barter, America, holiday, settlement, Challenge Word: *Wampanoag
Math-
I am SO proud of these kids!
First of all, most of them have memorized multiplication facts all the
way though their 9’s! In class, we have
been learning how to multiply 3 and 4-gigit numbers by one-digit numbers, how
to multiply across zeroes, and how to solve real-world word problems with these
skills. They are working hard and are
catching on quickly!
Science-
We continued to work on our animal and plant cell posters,
labeling all the parts, learning what they do, and practicing teamwork as we
go!
Social Studies-
This week, we learned about the history of Veteran’s Day. We discussed the branches of service and discussed
several of our country’s major wars, as well.
We learned about the meaning behind the poppies, and painted beautiful pictures
of them. We are so honored to have been
able to recognize our veterans this week!
SPECIAL CLASSES
Art-We painted American flags and then hunted for words that describe America to Us from magazines. We found words like: free, home, Spirit, kind, people, liberty, and God. :)
Music- Music was ALL about the Veteran’s Day program
this week, as we practiced songs with chimes and the 3rd graders. Next week, we will focus on our Christmas
Program!
P.E.- We learned basketball skills: dribbling, passing, and shooting!
Writing- We wrote letters to Veterans and then focused on building suspense and writing a climax to a story when writing fiction.
Have a blessed weekend,
Kim Brunkhorst
