Here is what we have been up to this week:
RELIGION- This week, we discussed the stories of
David and Bathsheba, as well as King Solomon.
We talked about the many ways that God gives us that help us to overcome
temptation—His Word, our church leaders, parents, elders, teachers, and
peers. We also discussed how God always
forgives and helps us by wiping the slate clean for us! We have such an AWESOME GOD!
MEMORY next week: 1/11- THE TENTH COMMANDMENT
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant
or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
1/14- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so
that we do not entice or force away our neighbor’s wife, workers, or animals,
or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty.
LANGUAGE ARTS- We read the phenomenal story called Antarctic
Journal: Four Months at the Bottom of the World. This review states it well: “Sketchbook in hand, an artist leaves home to
spend four months in Antarctica. She hikes up glaciers, camps on deserted
islands, and sees mirages of castles in the air. She sails past icebergs and
humpback whales. And she fills her sketchbook with drawings of penguin chicks
huddled in their nests and seals basking in the sun. Jennifer Dewey's sketches,
photographs, journal entries, and letters home let you see the last great
wilderness on earth through the eyes of an artist at work.” We LOVED it and it led to some great discussions,
and a few videos where we got to see actual footage. We learned so much! In Language Arts, we also discussed
metaphors, similes, and sequencing this week.
During DEAR time, we were introduced to our new Author of the Month,
Beverly Cleary. We already love Ramona
Quimby and her sis, Beezus!
SPELLING WORDS for next Friday, January 14th: (from
“My Brother Martin”) west, steep, member, gleam, fresh, freedom, speed, steam,
beast, believe, speck, kept, cheap, pretend, greed, shelf, least, eager,
reason, chief, echo, menu, *segregation
MATH- You have probably heard, but we are completing
long-division with remainders in here!
Our brains have grown, we gotten better at asking questions, and we are
learning some MATH in 4th grade!
;) We literally have been working
on this all week, and are mastering it.
Please continue to review simple math multiplication facts at home. Our mad minutes are getting better, and most
have memorized all the way up through the 12s, but are still have some
struggles when we mix all of those facts up.
The kiddos are learning that with these facts memorized, long division
is easier and faster. Imagine that! ;)
Thank you for your help. I am SO
PROUD.
SCIENCE- We finally finished up the second lesson
about genus, species, and classifying animals and plants. (It was as if we were off of school for two
weeks or something!) We discussed the
Red Tide too, and were amazed at how harmful this bacteria could be!
SPECIAL CLASSES
Art- We made Snowflake Snowmen using oil pastels,
watercolors, coffee filters, and construction paper. They are beautiful! We also listened to the story of Snowflake
Bentley.
P.E.- This week, we played a fun dodgeball game
called “Pin Down!”
Computer- We got onto www.beverlycleary.come to learn more
about Beverly Cleary and take some fun quizzes about her characters.
Music- We learned some new fun movements and story
songs in Music class this week. The
kiddos came back from Music class all energized! We LOVE Ms. Rathke!
Writing- We
wrote birthday letters for Ms. Rathke (today is her birthday!), and then
continued on our fictional narratives.
God's Blessings,
Kim Brunkhorst
