Here is what we have been up to this week:

RELIGION- We learned about when Elijah went to heaven on the chariot of fire, and about Elisha and his years as a prophet.  Yesterday, we had a mature conversation about death, and what happens to our souls and to our bodies when we pass away.  We talked about ways we can witness about Jesus and His saving grace, when others ask us questions about death and what happens.  We cited Scripture to find the answers!

 MEMORY for next week:

1/17-The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

1/20- Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

LANGUAGE ARTS/SOCIAL STUDIES- We learned all about young Martin Luther King Jr., in the book “My Brother Martin” by his sister, Christine King Farris.  It was so very insightful into his young life!  We also read several other books about Martin, including “Martin’s Words,” by Doreen Rappaport. This book will inspire our art work and writing assignments next week!  The most important thing we learned from Martin:  LOVE, NOT HATE.  He promoted the peaceful protest and standing up for others and for love.  We even watched him give his speck, “I have a Dream.”  Next week, we will discuss his impact in the world more when we read the story, “Happy Birthday Dr. King.” We also had some fun with idioms this week!

SPELLING WORDS for Friday, January 20th: (from Happy Birthday, Dr. King!)

peaceful, protest, fare, injustice, boycott, civil rights, dream, equality, freedom, movement, treatment, kindness, *stupendous

MATH- We have been practicing ling division with 2 and 3 digit numbers, and with zeroes.  We continue to learn how to interpret the remainders and complete long word problems!  We just finished memorizing multiplication 12s, and will start mixing up those facts during Mad Minutes next week!

SCIENCE- This week, we learned all about flowering plants, their parts, and the terms reproduction, pollination, fertilization, and traits.  We also completed an experiment with onion plants with roots to determine whether or not root hairs affect the amount of water a plant can absorb.  We had some interesting hypotheses!  We will finish up the chapter early next week, and will test over it on Friday, January 20th.  We will also be playing Science Jeopardy in class next week to practice!  Your kiddo can also play this at home!  ;)  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1JAN8EoMJj3IJcTSB-_9rc7A5xNmC3X7kiUGXpLByx7I/edit?usp=sharing

SPECIAL CLASSES

WRITING- We watched the Dr. Seuss cartoon/story entitled, “Sneetches.”  This story led us to a great discussion about judging others for what they look like, instead of their character.  We wrote down our thoughts about this too!  We then reviewed key components of Dr. King’s I Have a Dream” speech, and wrote down our own dreams.  We will illustrate these next week.

P.E.- We played a dodgeball game called Swamp Ball!  This was SO fun!

COMPUTER- We finished up our paragraphs in Google Docs, and began working on a slide called All About Me.

ART-We used oil pastels and construction paper to make snowmen from a bird’s eye view.

Blessings,

Kim
