Have beautiful, sunny Friday!

Dear 4th Grade Parents,

It has been another beautiful week!  We had our MAP testing this week, and it changed our schedule up some, but we rallied and worked hard!  Once I review the test results, I will send them home to you.  We can discuss what these scores mean, and how they will help my instruction.  Students will be testing two more times this year—in January and in April.
 Upcoming Events:
*TIE DYE party hosted by Timothy Lutheran Church—Sunday, September 14th, from 2pm-4pm.  (See the attachment.)

*PICTURE DAY - is next THURSDAY, September 18. We will begin right away at 8:45 in the morning with the M/W/F preschool class.

*EARLY RELEASE - Midterms are next Friday, Sept. 19. We release at 12:30 - however there will be aftercare available for those parents that cannot make it at 12:30.

*PLEASE CONSIDER donating some time to work in our TIMMY BURGER BOOTH at the Fall Fun Fest over the weekend of September 18-21!  It is a lot of fun,  a perfect time to witness, and of course, a Timmy Burger will be in your future!  ;)  Families can sign-up together to work too.  You can find the link at the bottom of this page:
*PARADE - TLS has a float in the Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest Parade on Saturday, Sept. 20. We will meet behind the Blue Springs School District Office at 1801 NW Vesper St. at 9:30 and are entry #60. The parade begins at 10am and ends at St. John LaLande church and school. All students participating must have a parent/adult walking as part of the TLS gang. We recommend parking near St. John for the easiest exit.
*Timothy Lutheran School’s 8th annual WALK-A-THON is Friday, September 27th from 1:30-2:30.  We are hosting this fun fundraiser to raise funds for our school—to buy a ClearTouch panel for the7th grade classroom and to put towards a new soccer goal.  All students will be participating and can get pledges for completing their laps around the school’s parking lots.  (Pledge sheets are coming home today.)  If a student chooses not to get pledges, it is okay!  We all are going to walk and celebrate the ENDURANCE God has given us!  We do need parent volunteers if you are available.   We will need people to send in snacks, to keep track of laps, and to stand as route guards and cheerleaders!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
UPCOMING FIELD TRIP- On Friday, October 10th, we will be traveling to Coterie Theatre located inside Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64108, to see the play A Wrinkle in Time. This is the play based on the book we are reading in class by Madeleine L'Engle.  The play begins at 10 o'clock.  We will leave school at 8:45 and return by 12:00, just in time for lunch! We will need drivers for this field trip! All tickets, students and parents, are paid for.  Thank you! I have reserved 20 seats in all for us. :)  Please sign and return the waiver coming home with your child today.
Here is the sign-up to come with us!
Here is what we have been up to this week:
RELIGION- One of my highlights that we do every day, is that we have devotions every morning, followed by highs and lows, which is always so wonderful, as I get an insight into the children’s lives that I normally would not get the chance to see.  It is so wonderful… We always then pray for one another and give each other a blessing.  This week, we learned about the life of Moses, the 10 Plagues, and the exodus out of Egypt.  We talked about baptism, and the many gifts that God gives us and how to use these to glorify Him.
Pastor Ryan discussed the importance of water this week in Chapel, and how we need it for so many things in our lives.  Especially the cleansing waters of our Heavenly Father!  "Water Matters!"

SOCIAL STUDIES-This week we discussed the tragedies of September 11th, 2001.  We watched a short video about this fateful day, and also read several books and had a very candid discussion.  We made beautiful illustrations about our thoughts…This led to a great discussion about God and His love for us.  We shared the Bible verse Romans 8: 38-39….and discussed how God will never, ever leave us.  We used this verse to illustrate our thoughts of 9/11.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.~ Romans 8: 38-39
LANGUAGE ARTS- We finished up the novel Because of Winn Dixie!  This was such an amazing book, and led to so many discussions about friendship, not judging one another, and what forgiveness looks like.  This book has a lot of sadness in it too, and it has been the perfect opportunity to connect this story to our faith, and how sin is in the world, but we need to remember that Jesus has conquered that sin and death, and we can form friendships and help one another with those hardships of life.
We also learned about our new Author of the Month, Madeleine L'Engle, and began reading A Wrinkle in Time!  This is a COOL book!  It has a ton of imagery, plot twists, and excitement!
Please remind your student that our Newbery book reports and projects are due September 30th.
Skills we reviewed this week:  character development, cause and effect, long and short i words, and problems/solutions.

MATH- This week, we reviewed place value and worked on rounding and estimating sums.  This took us awhile, as this was a tough concept, but we powered through!  We tested over this material on Wednesday.  We began talking in depth about Number Sense and have worked on using a "number of the day" and dissecting it down to understand it and its qualities.    We are on our 3’s in mad minutes!  Please keep working at home!
SCIENCE- We discussed roots and stems, and parts of the tree and its functions.  We discussed how God designed stems and trunks to provide support and to move the nutrients that plants need.  We have been learning a lot of new vocabulary words!
SPECIAL CLASSES
ART- We studied primary, secondary, and tertiary colors this week and created color wheels with tempera paint.  Then, we painted our horizon pictures with that Expressionistic style!
MUSIC- Students sang hymns praising Jesus!
COMPUTERS-We finished up friendly letters, read my responses to them, began publishing our first stories, and then practiced the home keys on typing.com.
WRITING- This week, we shared the last of our Summer Vacation stories and began writing our own fictional stories using the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
P.E.- We worked on volleyball skills this week—passing, setting, hitting, and serving!

Have a VERY blessed weekend!
