Newsletter From 1-11-13
Dear Parents,
It was so great to see your children again this week! I missed them so much! Goodness! We have had a busy week, but have had lots of fun!
Thank you so much for your prayers and well wishes for our wedding this weekend! I have some VERY excited kiddos in here, and it all makes me feel so, so loved. Thank you! Many of the kids have asked me what we want in gifts…please know that we are combining two households, so we don’t need anything. Just your presence is gift enough! God is so good and I am blessed beyond measure. Love to you all!
There are many important events coming up! Look for information regarding National Lutheran Schools’ Week festivities (January 27-February 3) coming up. We will sing in church, enjoy dress up days, go bowling, celebrate 100 Day, have the Scholastic Book Fair, enjoy a pajama party, invite grandparents, put on a talent show and lead worship services. It will be a fun filled week!! Please pay special attention to the list of important dates below!
Information regarding the talent show (February 1) will be sent home in an email. Participants may volunteer via Sign-Up Genius. Auditions will be Wednesday, January 23, after school.
Today ends the 2nd academic quarter. The children have been working very hard and I am proud of their progress! Report Cards will be sent home Wednesday.
Here is what we did this week:
In Religion this week talked about Epiphany and how Jesus came to redeem us. We discussed different names for Jesus, and how we view Him in our lives! We had some great conversations!
In Language Arts this week, third graders read a story called “The Extra-Good Sunday.” This was a Ramona Quimby story! Remember her? The kids really enjoyed this, and are starting to attack the Beverly Cleary books I have in my classroom. Some stories are timeless! The fourth graders read “Ecology for Kids,” and learned about helping the planet. We had some great discussions about how each of us can help in our own ways.
We have been busy learning cursive letters too, as you have seen! We have finished up lowercase and have begun capitals. Please encourage your child to practice these at home. Thank you!
In Math this week, both groups tested over Chapter 8. We have been working with multiplication and its properties. We are having fun! Fourth grade is diving into division too! I have urged each child to practice his or her math facts as often as they can with flash cards or computer games. We take mad minutes at school almost daily and play games that include our multiplication facts too. If we can all get these memorized by May, we will take a class trip to Winstead’s for some skyscraper sodas! They are determined to get there!
During Social Studies, we worked with our “Getting Along” series. This week we formed teams and practiced teamwork by acting out a machine. We could not use words, only sound effects, and the other groups had to try and guess what the machine was! It was so much fun! We had a toaster, a soda machine, a school bus, and a car wash. They were hilarious! All of the groups showed teamwork and cooperation. I was very proud. I even saw one group, who had a lot of leader-type personalities within it, learn how to incorporate everyone’s ideas. It was an awesome learning experience.
During Art, we learned how to make snowflakes and made Snowflake Snowmen! Check these out in the hall!
In P.E. this week, we played a game called BeanBag Scramble, which we used different sets of skills to race for beanbags.
In Music this week, we worked on two new songs for National Lutheran Schools’ Week, “Audience of One” and “In Christ Alone”. (We sing at the south campus on January 27 and the north campus on February 3.) We also practiced a few of our favorite choir songs for the talent show.
For Writers’ Workshop, we worked on our fairytales and began writing persuasive essays. . They are coming along beautifully!
