Newsletter 5-3-13
Dear Parents,
It has been a fun and event-filled week in 3rd/4th grade land. :) I am thinking, “SPRING!” Wanna join me?! :) Here are some things that are coming up soon:
Beginning at 7:00 tonight, students will be singing and dancing the night away at the Cinco de Mayo performance! Girls need to arrive at school at 6:15 and boys need to arrive at 6:30. Boys are instructed to wear blue/black jeans, a white shirt (short- or long-sleeved), and dress shoes. Girls need to wear their hair in a bun (if possible), a white short-sleeved blouse, and shorts to wear under their dancing skirt. They will also need to wear dress shoes. See you soon!
Timothy Lutheran School’s Athletic Banquet is fast approaching! Awards will be given to all athletes and eighth graders will be recognized. Come join us for some fun and fellowship Friday, May 17th, at 7:00 p.m. The banquet will be held in the gym, and all athletes, parents, and loved ones of Timothy Lutheran School are welcome to come! Dessert will be served before the awards. If you are in 4th grade and participated in athletics, please email me and let me know if you and your family plan to attend.
Book Reports: Third grade reports are due on May 15th. Fourth graders brought theirs in this week, and will share them with the class during Readers’ Theatre next week!
Mission Project: Our spring mission project, “Help for the Homeless”, continues. We will assemble kits for area homeless people. This week, we are collecting gallon ziplocks and granola bars.
During Week #1, we collected washcloths and soap/body wash
During Week #2 (April 10-17) – shampoo, deodorant, and lotion
During Week #3 (April 17-24) – toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
During Week #4 (April 24-May 1) – disposable razors and shaving cream
Week #5 (May 1-8) – gallon ziplocks and granola bars
Week #6 (May 8-15) – catch up week – we’ll send out an email as this week comes closer, telling you what to bring to keep our overall donation numbers even
Religion: We continued to learn about the commandments this week. We discussed the 6th commandment; you shall not commit adultery, with a discussion of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife, and how he resisted temptation. We also discussed the 7th commandment; you shall not steal, and talked about scenarios where the students had to decide if the person in it was stealing or not. In each scenario, there was a life lessons learned! Copying someone’s answers is stealing, not returning something you find from another person is stealing, and taking something when no one else is looking is stealing. We discussed how giving into temptations always lead to some sort of consequences.
Math: Third graders began learning about quadrilaterals, circles, and Venn diagrams this week. Fourth graders are working on longer finding mean, and checking their division work. Today, both groups had fun making different shapes from pattern blocks, and solving math problems with them. Please urge your child to keep working with your child on their multiplication facts at home!
Language Arts: This week, we worked with prepositional phrases. We found a fun song on You-Tube that helped us learn them! Both groups began reading in a new reading book! Third graders read about “The Foot Race Across America.” I was not aware of this true story of runner, Andy Payne, and it is so amazing…(it may just be the runner in me!!!), but I thought this was a cool story! Fourth graders read the story, “The Girl Who Loved Spiders,” and we had some great discussions about some creepy, crawly things! Both groups wrote this week too. Third graders wrote racing stories, and fourth graders wrote creepy-crawly poems.
Writing: This week, we wrote “What Am I?” poems, where the writers had to write from the point of view of an inanimate object (a soccer ball, a plant, etc.) They were fun!
Art: We worked on cards and projects for you, Mom! :)
Music: Students have been working on their songs for Cinco de Mayo. For a bit of a break, we enjoyed a “Kid Choice” day in choir. We sang and danced to our students’ favorite songs, including “In Christ Alone” and “Gummy Bear” (dance). It was fun!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Blessings,
Kim Brunkhorst
